Researcherssaymathsanxietyshouldbetreatedasa“realconcern”becauseofthedamageitdoestoachild’slearning.Pupilsinbothprimaryandsecondaryschoolcanfindthemselveslockedinacycleof despair,sufferingfromanxietywhichharmstheirmathsperformance,whichinturnleadstoincreasedanxiety.

Thechildreninterviewedprovidedvividdescriptionsoftheirfearsaboutmaths.Oneprimaryschoolstudentdescribedhisreactionduringamathlesson.“Becausemytable’sinthecornerIkindoftriednotto beinthelesson.”

Researchersfoundtherewasageneralsensethatmathswashardcomparedwithothersubjects,whichledtoalossofconfidence.Yetthestudypointsoutthatmostchildrenwithhighlevelsofmathsanxietyare alsohighachieversinthesubject.
