Thegeneralideaofthispassage:

Thepassagebeginswiththeauthor’sdecisiontospendthenightintheCentralParkaloneafterhereadsOgdenNash’spoem.Itispreciselythefearinspiredbythepoemthatpromptshisadventure.

Duringthefirsthourorso,theauthorwandersaroundtheDelacorteTheterexperiencingthesenseofexhilarationofthesummer-stockShakespeareproduction.Therelaxedmood,however,issoonreplacedbyasenseoffearwhenhefindshimselflostinthedensewoodsandcontinuallyfollowedbyacrushingsound.HeturnsfranticallyleftandrightuntilhecomesintotheRamble.LaterhearrivesattheWestSideofthepark,aroundSeventy-seventh,whereamurderoccurredtwoyearsago.

Butfearisnottheonlythingthattheauthorfeelsinthepark,healsoexperiencesthearchitecturalbeautythere.Later,heencountersacouple,whorespondhystericallytohisfriendlygreetings.Untilthen,theauthorrealizesthatheisnolongerafraidandheisfrightening.TheauthorthenmakesadescriptionofthepastofCentralPark,fromthechangeofitsfunctiontodifferentstylesofitsarchitecture.Next,hesetsoutforthenorthernendofthePark,wherehecomesacrossagangofkidsonbicycleszoomingandhooting,whichremindshimofthecriminalcasetherein1989.Thentheauthorhasanotheraestheticexperience.HestopsaroundNinety-fifthStreet,sitsonabenchandisfascinatedbythebeautifulviewofNewYorkcity.
