Thepassagebeginswiththeauthor’sdecisiontospendthenightintheCentralParkaloneafterhereadsOgdenNash’spoem.Itispreciselythefearinspiredbythepoemthatpromptshisadventure.
Duringthefirsthourorso,theauthorwandersaroundtheDelacorteTheterexperiencingthesenseofexhilarationofthesummer-stockShakespeareproduction.Therelaxedmood,however,issoonreplacedbyasenseoffearwhenhefindshimselflostinthedensewoodsandcontinuallyfollowedbyacrushingsound.HeturnsfranticallyleftandrightuntilhecomesintotheRamble.LaterhearrivesattheWestSideofthepark,aroundSeventy-seventh,whereamurderoccurredtwoyearsago.
