ThisdocumentisintendedtohelpyoureviewyourschematicandcomparethepinusageagainsttheMAXVDeviceFamilyPinConnectionGuidelines(PDF)version1.0andotherreferencedliteratureforthisdevicefamily.ThetechnicalcontentisdividedintofocusareassuchasFPGApowersupplies,programming,anddualpurposeI/Opins.

Withineachfocusarea,thereisatablethatcontainsthevoltageorpinnameforallofthededicatedanddualpurposepinsforthedevicefamily.Insomecases,thedevicedensityandpackagecombinationmaynotincludesomeofthepinsshowninthisworksheet,youshouldcrossreferencewiththepin-outfileforyourspecificdevice.Linkstothedevicepin-outfilesareprovidedatthetopofeachsection.

Beforeyoubeginusingthisworksheettoreviewyourschematicandcommittoboardlayout,Alterahighlyrecommends:

1)ReviewtheKnowledgeDatabaseforMAXVDeviceKnownIssuesandotherMAXVDeviceKnowledgeBaserecords.

2)CompileyourdesignintheQuartus®IIsoftwaretocompletion.

Forexample,thereareI/OrelatedVCCIOrequirementsfortheI/Ostandardsusedinthedevice.Ifyoudonothaveacompleteproject,thenataminimumatoplevelprojectshouldbeusedwithallI/Opinsdefined,placed,andapplyalloftheprogrammableoptionsthatyouplantouse.TheI/OAnalysistoolinthePinPlannercanthenbeusedontheminimalprojecttovalidatethepinoutintheQuartusIIsoftwaretoassuretherearenoconflictswiththedevicerulesandguidelines.

WhenusingtheI/OAnalysistoolyoumustensuretherearenoerrorswithyourpinout.Additionally,youshouldcheckallwarningandcriticalwarningmessagestoevaluatetheirimpactonyourdesign.Youcanrightclickyourmouseoveranyerror,warningorcriticalwarningmessageandselect“Help”.ThiswillbringopenanewHelpwindowwithfurtherinformationonthecauseoftheerrororwarning,andtheactionthatisrequired.

Forexample,youcanuseelectromigrationcurrentassignmentstospecifytheDCcurrentdrawonI/Opinsthatdriveresistiveloads,suchaspullupresistorsorLEDs.ThedevicehasDCcurrentdensityrestrictionsthatmustbemetbasedonthepinlocationsusedinthedesign.Thefollowingerrorisgeneratedifthedevicecurrentdensityrestrictionsareviolated:

CAUSE:

Youmadepinassignmentsinthespecifiedrangeofpads,butsomeofthepinsaretooclosetogether.ThespecifiedI/Obankdrawsacurrentthatexceedsthemaximumbythespecifiedamount.ThedevicecandriveonlyalimitedamountofcurrenttoeachI/Obank.Clickthe+icontodisplaydetailsaboutthespecificpins,type,location,andI/OstandardsusedinthespecifiedI/Obank.

ACTION:

ReassignsomepinstoreducethecurrentdensityorassignsomepinstouseanI/Ostandardwithalowercurrent.TodisplayI/Obanks,opentheChipPlannerandturnonI/ObankdisplayintheLayersSettingsdialogbox.

TherearemanyreportsavailableforuseafterasuccessfulcompilationorI/Oanalysis.Forexample,youcanusethe“AllPackagePins”and“I/OBankUsage”reportswithintheCompilation–Fitter–ResourceSectiontoseealloftheI/OstandardsandI/Oprogrammableoptionsthatareassignedtoallofthepinsinyourdesign,aswellasviewtherequiredVCCIOforeachI/Obank.Thesereportsmustmatchyourschematicpinconnections.

Thefirstcolumn(Plane/Signal)liststhedevicevoltageorsignalpinname.Youshouldonlyeditthiscolumntoremovededicatedordualpurposepinnamesthatarenotavailableforyourdevicedensityandpackageoption.

Thesecondcolumn(SchematicName)isforyoutoenteryourschematicname(s)forthesignal(s)orplaneconnectedtothedevicepin(s).

Thethirdcolumn(ConnectionGuidelines)shouldbeconsidered“readonly”asthiscontainsAltera’srecommendedconnectionguidelinesforthevoltageplaneorsignal.

Thefourthcolumn(Comments/Issues)isanareaprovidedasa“notepad”foryoutocommentonanydeviationsfromtheconnectionguidelines,andtoverifyguidelinesaremet.Inmanycasestherearenotesthatprovidefurtherinformationanddetailthatcomplimenttheconnectionguidelines.
