MyfavoritetimewaswhenIpickedoutthiselderlywomanwhowaswalkingaroundthe14somewhatconfused.Ihadcomeacrosshernumeroustimesandsheonlysmiledslightlyonce.Whenshecametothecheckout(Iwaswatchingfromoutside)herface15andthesmilewasthebiggestIhadeverseen.LaterthatweekthecashierwhomIhadhad16metoldmethattheladyhadbeensosurprisedandwhileshewaswalkingoutwiththegrocerybagtohercar,shewasplanningwhatshewasgoingtodoforsomeoneelse.Itwasawesome.

In1974,theUnitedNationsWorldHealthOrganization(WHO)adoptedanewpolicy.WHOtriedtoencouragedevelopingcountriestodeveloptheirowntraditionalformsofmedicine,insteadofturningtoWesternmedicineforexpensivecurestomedicalproblem.Thereweremanypeoplewholookeddownonthisnewpolicy,butWHOfeltitwasthemostreasonablesolutiontothelargehealthproblemsfacingpoorcountries.Today,WHOestimatesthatathirdoftheglobalpopulationlackeasyaccesstomoderndrugs,andthatinthepoorestpartsofAfricaandAsia,thatfigurerisestofiftypercent.WHObelievedthatthepeopleindevelopingcountrieswhocouldnotaffordorfindmodernmedicaldoctorswerebetteroffusingtraditionalmedicineratherthannomedicineatall.

Today,traditionalmedicineandtreatmentsarenotonlyusedindevelopingcountries,butareincreasinginpopularityinNorthAmericaandEurope.IntheUnitedKingdom,forexample,$230millionisspentontraditionalremediesannually.InChina,traditionalherbalmedicinesaccountforthirtytofiftypercentofallmedicinesused.Theglobalmarketfortraditionalmedicinesisestimatedtobe$60billion,andgrowingeveryyear.

Twenty-fivepercentofmodernmedicinesaremadefromplantsthatwerefirstusedintraditionalmedicine,andscientistsbelievetheyhavejustscratchedthesurface.Forexample,oneChineseherbalremedy,whichhasbeenusedfortwothousandyears,hasrecentlybeenfoundtobeeffectiveagainstvarietiesofmalariathathaveresistancetootherdrugs.Thisherbcouldendupsavingamillionlivesayear,mostlyamongchildren.InSouthAfrica,anothertraditionalplantisbeingusedtotreatpatientswithAIDS.

Recognizingtheimportanceoftraditionalmedicines,in2003WHOlaunchedaTraditionalMedicineStrategy.Amongtherecommendationsofthisstrategy,therewereseveralareasofconcern.Thefirstareaofconcernissafety.WHOrecommendsmorescientifictestingontraditionalmedicine—notalltraditionalmedicinesareashelpfulasthetwomentionedabove,andsomecanactuallybeharmful.

Forexample,intheUnitedStates,atraditionalChineseherb,MaHuang,wassoldasadietdrug.Itwastoblameformanyheartattacksandatleastadozendeaths.InBelgium,atleastseventypeoplereceivedliverdamagewhentheytookherbalremedymadefromthewrongspeciesofplant.

Anotherareaofconcernisbiodiversityandsustainability(生物多样性和持续性).Somepeopleareworriedthatasherbalmedicinesbecomemorepopular,theplantsthatthesemedicinesaremadefrommaybecomeendangeredastheyareover-harvested.Forexample,ineasternandsouthernAfricaaspeciesofwildpotatohasbecomeendangeredbecauseofreportsthatitiseffectiveinthetreatmentofAIDS.

Thereisalsotheproblemofrightstodrugscreatedfromtraditionalremedies.Researchintotraditionalremediesisincreasinglybeingdonebylargedrugcompanies,mostlybasedinWesterncountries.Thereisafearthatasthesecompaniesproducedrugstheywillclaimtohavetherightstothemedicine.WHOrecognizesthatthereisaneedtomakesurethatanyprofitsfromdrugsproducedfromtraditionalmedicinesaresharedwiththelocalculturefromwhichthemedicineoriginated.

Traditionaltreatmentsdon’tonlyincludemedicines,theyalsoincludesuchtreatmentsasacupuncture(usingneedlestotreatillnesses)andaromatherapy(which,asthenamesuggests,usestypesofsmellastherapy).Acupuncture,forexample,startedinChina,butisnowperformedinmorethanseventycountriesaroundtheworld.Thereareatleast50,000acupuncturistsinAsiaalone,andanother15,000inEurope,and12,000intheUnitedStates.Evenconventionaldoctorshavecometorecognize
