Thatcangofornonchemicaladdictionsaswell.Behaviors,fromgamblingtoshoppingtosex,maystartoutashabitsbutslideintoaddictions.Sometimestheremightbeabehavior-specificrootoftheproblem.Volkow'sresearchgroup,forexample,hasshownthatpathologicallyobesepeoplewhoarecompulsiveeatersexhibithyperactivityintheareasofthebrainthatprocessfoodstimuli--includingthemouth,lipsandtongue.Forthem,activatingtheseregionsislikeopeningthefloodgatestothepleasurecenter.Almostanythingdeeplyenjoyablecanturnintoanaddiction,though.
