Thenextafternoonthefarmerwassenttothepolicestation.Havingshownthebaskets,anofficerasked,“Aretheseyours”“Yes,sir.”thefarmeransweredtimidly（胆怯地）.“Haveyoukilledtheman”“No,no,sir.”thefarmersaidinahurry.“Whendidyouseethedeadman”“Aboutsevenlastevening.”“Didyouseewhokilledtheman”“No,sir.”Theofficerbroughtoutaknifeandasked,“Haveyouseenityet”“No,sir.”Theofficerbecameangryandtoldthepolicementobeathimupandsenthimintoprison.theofficerwantedtotrapthefarmerintotheconfession（供认）,butthefarmerdidn’tadmithewasthemurderer.

Sara’smotherreallydidn’tthinkthebabyduckwouldsurviveverylong.Buttohersurprise,Pinkygrewandgotstrongerandstronger.Soon,thelittleducklingwasa healthy,hungryduckwithwhitefeathers.

“WefedPinkyoatmeal,cookedanduncooked,andsmallpiecesofvegetables,”saidSara.PinkylivedinsidethehousewithSaraandherfamily.ShespeciallyfanciedtakingbathswithSara.EveryonetreatedPinkyasafamilymember.

Butjustwheneverythingappearedtobeperfect,thenightofthe“talk”came.Sara’sMomandDadsatherdown,explainingthatthebestthingforPinkywastoliveanormalducklife,withotherducks.Itwasnotnaturalforduckstoliveindoorswithafamily,herfathertoldher.HeaddedPinkyneededtoswiminpondsanddoall thesamethingsthatducksinthewilddo.
