Manygovernmentsthinkthateconomicprogressistheirmostimportantgoal.Somepeople,however,thinkthatothertypesofprogressareequallyimportantforacountry.

Discussboththeseviewsandgiveyourownopinion

Peoplehavedifferentviewsabouthowgovernmentsshouldmeasuretheircountries’progress.Whileeconomicprogressisofcourseessential,Iagreewiththosewhobelievethatothermeasuresofprogressarejustasimportant.

Therearethreekeyreasonswhyeconomicgrowthisseenasafundamentalgoalforcountries.Firstly,ahealthyeconomyresultsinjobcreation,ahighlevelofemployment,andbettersalariesforallcitizens.Secondly,economicprogressensuresthatmoremoneyisavailableforgovernmentstospendoninfrastructureandpublicservices.Forexample,agovernmentwithhigherrevenuescaninvestinthecountry'stransportnetwork,itseducationsystemanditshospitals.Finally,astrongeconomycanhelpacountry’sstandingontheglobalstage,intermsofitspoliticalinfluenceandtradingpower.

However,Iwouldarguethatvariousotherformsofprogressarejustassignificantastheeconomicfactorsmentionedabove.Inparticular,weshouldconsidertheareaofsocialjustice,humanrights,equalityanddemocracyitself.Forexample,thetreatmentofminoritygroupsisoftenseenasareflectionofthemoralstandardsandlevelofdevelopmentofasociety.Perhapsanotherkeyconsiderationwhenjudgingtheprogressofamoderncountryshouldbehowwellthatcountryprotectsthenaturalenvironment,andwhetheritismovingtowardsenvironmentalsustainability.Alternatively,thesuccessofanationcouldbemeasuredbylookingatthehealth,well-beingandhappinessofitsresidents.

Inconclusion,theeconomyisobviouslyakeymarkerofacountry’ssuccess,butsocial,environmentalandhealthcriteriaareequallysignificant.

Ontheonehand,Iacceptthatbusinessesmustmakemoneyinordertosurviveinacompetitiveworld.Itseemslogicalthatthepriorityofanycompanyshouldbetocoveritsrunningcosts,suchasemployees’wagesandpaymentsforbuildingsandutilities.Ontopofthesecosts,companiesalsoneedtoinvestinimprovementsandinnovationsiftheywishtoremainsuccessful.Ifacompanyisunabletopayitsbillsormeetthechangingneedsofcustomers,anyconcernsaboutsocialresponsibilitiesbecomeirrelevant.Inotherwords,acompanycanonlymakeapositivecontributiontosocietyifitisingoodfinancialhealth.

Ontheotherhand,companiesshouldnotberunwiththesoleaimofmaximisingprofit;theyhaveawiderroletoplayinsociety.Onesocialobligationthatownersandmanagershaveistotreattheiremployeeswell,ratherthanexploitingthem.Forexample,theycouldpaya“livingwage”toensurethatworkershaveagoodqualityoflife.Ialsoliketheideathatbusinessescoulduseaproportionoftheirprofitstosupportlocalcharities,environmentalprojectsoreducationinitiatives.Finally,insteadoftryingtominimisetheirtaxpaymentsbyusingaccountingloopholes,Ibelievethatcompanybossesshouldbehappytocontributetosocietythroughthetaxsystem.
