Inthis2011digitalworld,opportunitiesforeducationareavailablelikeneverbefore.Thoughteachersusingonlinetoolsareempoweringstudentstotakepartintheireducation,theymayalsobeexposingthemtoinappropriatematerial,sexualpredators,bullyingandharassmentbypeers.Teacherswhoarenotcarefulwiththeiruseofthesitescanfallintoinappropriaterelationshipswithstudentsorpublicizephotosandinformationtheybelievedwerekeptprivate.Forthesereasons,criticsarecallingforregulationandforremovingsocialnetworkingfromclassrooms--despitethepositiveeffectstheyhaveonstudentsandtheessentialtoolstheyprovideforeducationintoday'sdigitalclimate.
Thepositiveeffectsofsocialnetworkingsitesineducationareprofound.AccordingtoastudyconductedbytheUniversityofMinnesota
(1)onstudentuseofsocialmedia,studentswhoarealreadyengaginginsocialnetworkingcouldbenefitfromincorporatingitintocurriculum.ChristineGreenhow,whowastheprincipalinvestigatorinthestudy,elaboratedontheimpactsocialnetworkingcouldhaveoneducation."Byunderstandinghowstudentsmaybepositivelyusingthesenetworkingtechnologiesintheirdailylivesandwheretheas-yet-unrecognizededucationalopportunitiesare,wecanhelpmakeschoolsevenmorerelevant,connected,andmeaningfultokids."
Throughutilizingteachingtechniquesthatincorporatesocialmedia,teachersareabletoincreasestudents'engagementintheireducation,increasetechnologicalproficiency,contributetoagreatersenseofcollaborationintheclassroom,andbuildbettercommunicationskills.AMashablearticletitled,“TheCaseforSocialMediainSchools”
(2)alsodetailsseveralreasonsforadvocatingtheuseofsocialnetworkingintheclassroomandprovidesarealexampleofhowitisaffectingeducationinapositiveway."AyearafterseventhgradeteacherElizabethDelmatoffstartedapilotsocialmediaprograminherPortland,Oregonclassroom,20percentofstudentsschool-widewerecompletingextraassignmentsfornocredit,gradeshadgoneupmorethan50percent,andchronicabsenteeismwasreducedbymorethanathird."
KarenCator,fromtheU.S.Dept.ofEducation,inanonlinequestionandanswerseriesfeaturedonedutopia.org(3)alsocommentedonthepotentialofsocialnetworkingtoimprovetheAmericaneducationsystem."Thinkaboutnotonlyincorporatingtechnologyintoyourlessons,butcreatingmoreandmorecompellingassignmentssothat21stcenturyskills,thekindsofthingsstudentswillhavetodevelopintermsofcriticalthinking,problemsolving,collaboration,globalparticipation--thattheseareincorporatedintoassignments.Thebestspaceswillincorporatesocialmedia,andinteractingwithothers."
Anotherstudy(4),whichanalyzedhowstudentsperformedwhenaskedtousetwittertodoassignments,foundthatstudentswhowereaskedto"contributetoclassdiscussionsandcompleteassignmentsusingTwitterincreasedtheirengagementoverasemestermorethantwiceasmuchasacontrolgroup."
Ascallsforeducationreformresonateacrossthecountryandloomingbudgetcutsindicateagrimfutureformanypublicschools,onlinetoolsarebecomingvaluableresources.Somesay,however,theycomewithtoogreatarisk.Reportsofsexualpredators(5)haveraisedthealarmandpromptedparentsandlegislatorstoquestionthepotentialofusingsocialmediaforeducation.
Thoughsexualpredatorsareoftencitedastheprimaryconcern,AmandaLenhartwiththePewResearchCenter'sInternetandAmericanLifeProject,explained,inanarticlefortheHoustonChronicle(6),thatthisislessofariskthanitismadeouttobe."Mostlykidsatriskalreadyhaveabunchofsocialandemotionalproblemsintheirlives.Thesekidsaretheoneswhomightengageinriskybehaviors,seekoutsextalkonlineandknowinglymeetpeoplewhoareolder."AccordingtotheChroniclearticle,"Peer-to-peerharassmentandbullyingaremuchmorecommonthreatstoonlineyoungsters,"whichisaconcernbothonlineandoff.
BothFederalandstatelegislationhasbeenproposedtocurbtheuseofsocialnetworkinginschools,whichhasincitedcontroversyoverthelegalityofsuchlegislation.Criticsbelievethatregulatingonlineactivityisaviolationoffirstamendmentrights.
Inlieuofthecontroversy,networkshavesteppeduptheireffortstocreatesaferonlinecommunitiesforstudents.Facebook,whichcurrentlyhasover900millionusers,makingitthelargestsocialnetworkingsite,partneredwiththeNationalParent-TeacherAssociation(PTA)"topromoteresponsibleandsafeInternetusetokids,parentsandteachers."Accordingtoareportaboutthecollaboration,"NationalPTAandFacebookwillestablishacomprehensiveprogramthatwillprovideinformation,supportandnewstoencouragecitizenshiponline,reducecyberbullying,andadvanceInternetsafetyandsecurity."Facebookwentontocreatebothsafetyandeducationtabsthatprovideinformationandresourcesforeducatorsandconcernedparents.
Asthedebatecontinuesovertheroletechnologyandsocialnetworkingplayintheclassroom,proponentsonbothsidesarefightingtofindabalancebetweentheimportanceofinnovationandthesafetyofstudents.Thoughtherearerisksassociatedwithencouragingstudentstousesocialnetworkingsites,proponentsarguethepotentialforopportunityoutweighsthecosts.Assolutionsthatsatisfybothsidescontinuetodevelop,onlineeducationresourcesmaypavethewayforgrowthinAmerica'sschools.
