TheHIP6301multi-phasePWMcontrolICtogetherwithitscompaniongatedrivers,theHIP6601B,HIP6602B,HIP6603BorHIP6604BandexternalMOSFETsprovidesaprecisionvoltageregulationsystemforadvancedmicroprocessors.Multiphasepowerconversionisamarkeddeparturefromearliersinglephaseconverterconfigurationspreviouslyemployedtosatisfytheeverincreasingcurrentdemandsofmodernmicroprocessors.Multi-phaseconvertors,bydistributingthepowerandloadcurrentresultsinsmallerandlowercosttransistorswithfewerinputandoutputcapacitors.Thesereductionsaccruefromthehighereffectiveconversionfrequencywithhigherfrequencyripplecurrentduetothephaseinterleavingprocessofthistopology.Forexample,athreephaseconvertoroperatingat350kHzwillhavearipplefrequencyof1.05MHz.Moreover,greaterconvertorbandwidthofthisdesignresultsinfasterresponsetoloadtransients.

OutstandingfeaturesofthiscontrollerICinclude

programmableVIDcodesfromthemicroprocessorthat

rangefrom1.100Vto1.850Vwithasystemaccuracyof

±1%.PullupcurrentsontheseVIDpinseliminatestheneed

n

forexternalpullupresistors.Inaddition“droop”

compensation,usedtoreducetheovershootorundershoot

i

oftheCOREvoltage,iseasilyprogrammedwithasingle

resistor.

AnotherfeatureofthiscontrollerICisthePGOODmonitor

circuitwhichisheldlowuntiltheCOREvoltageincreases,

duringitsSoft-Startsequence,towithin10%ofthe

programmedvoltage.Over-voltage,15%aboveprogrammed

.

COREvoltage,resultsintheconvertershuttingcdownand

turningthelowerMOSFETsONtoclampandprotectthe

microprocessor.Undervoltageisalsodetectedandresults

inPGOODlowiftheCOREvoltagefalls10%belowthe

programmedlevel.Over-currentprotectionreducesthe

w

regulatorcurrenttolessthan25%woftheprogrammedtrip

value.Thesefeaturesprovidemonitoringandprotectionfor

themicroprocessorandpowersystem.
