Aspartofitsriskassessmentonanimalcloning,theFoodandDrugAdministration(FDA)concludedthatmilkandmeatfromclonedanimalsandtheiroffspring(后代)wereassafetoeatasproductsfromconventionalanimals.TheFDAfurtherannouncedthatitwouldnotrequirefoodproductsfromclonedanimalsortheiroffspringtobelabeledassuch.

ConsumerwatchdoggroupspointedoutthattheFDA’sanalysiswasbasedonlimiteddatasuppliedmainlyfromthecloningcompaniesthemselves.Inaddition,whilefoodsafetyisanobviousconcernofconsumers,itisnottheonlyissuethatmakespeopleuncomfortablewithanimalcloning.Forexample,surveysindicatethat63percentofconsumerswouldnotbuyfoodfromclonedanimalsevenifitwaslabeledas“safe”.Concernsaboutthemoralityofcloning,aswellasconcernsforanimalwelfare,leadabigmajorityofpeopletoopposecloninganimalsforfood.However,theseissueswerenotconsideredbytheFDA.Withoutlabelstoidentifyclonedfoods,consumerswhoopposeanimalcloningwouldbeforcedtomakepurchasesagainsttheirprincipleswithoutknowing.Consumershavetherighttoknowhowtheirfoodisproducedsotheycanmakeinformeddecisionsaboutwhattheybuyandwhattheyfeedtheirfamilies.
