Boydandherclassmatesmeasurednoiselevelsduringcollegehockeygames,includingfourplayedbytheirhometeam--UniversityofNebraskateamatOmaha’sCenturyLinkCentrefromNovember2014throughtoMarchthisyear.

Fortheloudestgame,theaverageloudnessequivalentlevelinthestudentsectionwas95.5decibels(分贝)-theequivalentofhearingajackhammerfrom50feetaway-withapeakof132decibels,theequivalentofajetengineabout100feetaway.

MsBoyd’steamfoundthatnoiselevelsinthestudentsectionweregenerallylouderthantheothers.However,whenthenoiselevelswereanalyzedcarefullytogetherwitheventsinthegame,theyfoundthattherewasn’tastrongconnectionbetweendecibellevelandgoalsscoredbythehometeam.“Therewasn’tenoughdatatoseewhetherloudnesswasconnectedwithhowmanygoalstheyachievedduringthegame.AndthisconclusionactuallyattractedalotmoreattentionthanIhadexpected.”SaidMsBoyd.

Insurveysgiventotheplayersaftereachmatch,MsBoydfoundthatthemajorityreportedthatthecrowdwasloudbutnotthatdistracting-“about70percentbetweensilentandloud”-andthatthenoiselevelsdidn’tpreventthemfromcommunicatingwiththeirteammatesorcoachwhileinplay.
