Acrossthecountry,sportsinjuriesareasafetyconcernforyoungathletes.Now,theAmericanMedicalAssociation(AMA)hasanewsetofguidelinesaimedatprotectingplayersfromthedangerofconcussions—seriousinjuriescausedbyablowtothehead.

“Byraisingawarenessoftheseriousrisksassociatedwithconcussionsandensuringthattheappropriateguidelinesareinplace,wecanreducethenumberofyoungathleteswhomayreturntothegametoosoon,whichcanputtheirhealthatfurtherrisk,”saidAMABoardMemberJackResneckJr,M.D.,inastatement.

Thepolicyrecommendsthatyoungathleteswhomayhaveaconcussionbetakenoffthefieldassoonaspossible.Then,theyareonlytoreturntotheirsportwithadoctor’swrittenapproval.Thepolicyalsosetsage-specificrulesforhealthcareprofessionalsandathleticorganizationsinevaluatingandcaringforconcussions.

AccordingtotheCenterforDiseaseControlandPrevention(CDC),aconcussionisatypeoftraumatic(创伤)braininjurycausedbyabump,blow,orjolttotheheadorhittothebodythatcausestheheadandbraintomoverapidlybackandforth.Thistypeofmovementcancausethebraintobouncearoundortwistinsidetheskull(颅骨).Itcandamagebraincellsandcreatechemicalchangesinthebrain.
