Thenweheadedouttowardsthemiddleofthelake.

We’dbeenwarnedthatthefirst100metreswouldbereallyrough.However,somewherenearthe750mmarkIwasstillwaitingforthecalm;itfeltmorelikeswimmingintheseathanalake.Itriedtofocusonmybreathingandtechnique,andjustkeepgoing.AsIapproachedthe400m-to-gomarkmylowerrightlegbecamepainful.Irecalledoverhearingpeopletalkingabouthowtheykeptswimmingthroughthepain,soItried.Butitdidn’twork.Ibegantofeeltheentirelegtightandpainful.Ididn’twanttostop,soIbentmyrightkneeandjustkickedwiththeleftleg.
