A.ThisstandardcontainsbasicrequirementsforproductscoveredbyULunderitsFollow-Upserviceforthiscategorywiththelimitationsgivenbelowandinthescopesectionofthisstandard.Theserequirementsarebaseduponsoundengineeringprinciples,research,recordsoftestandfieldexperience,andanappreciationoftheproblemsofmanufacture,installation,andusederivedfromconsultationwithandinformationobtainedfrommanufactures,users,inspectionauthorities,andotherhavingspecializedexperience.Theyaresubjecttorevisionasfurtherexperienceandinvestigationmayshowisnecessaryordesirable.

B.TheobservanceoftherequirementsofthisStandardbyamanufacturerisoneoftheconditionofthecontinuedcoverageofthemanufacturer’sproduct.

C.AproductwhichcomplieswiththetextofthisStandardwillnotnecessarybejudgedtocomplywiththeStandardif,whenexaminedandtested,itisfoundtohaveotherfeatureswhichimpairthelevelofsafetycontemplatedbytheserequirements.

1Scope

1.1Theserequirementscovercapacitorsratednotmorethan1.0microfarad,85℃250voltages,and60hertzthatareemployedinradio,televisionreceiving,andsimilarappliancecircuitwherebreakdownofthecapacitormayresultinariskoffire,electicshock,orinjurytopersons.

1.2Theserequirementsalsocoverdoubleprotectioncapacitorsratedmorethan1.0microfarad,85℃,125Voltages,and60hertzthatareemployedinvideo,televisionreceiving,andsimilarappliancecircuitswherebreakdownofthecapacitormayresultinariskoffire,electicshock,orinjurytopersons.

1.3Aproductthatcontainsfeaturescharacteristics,components,materialsorsystemsnewordiffientfromthoseinusewhenthestandardwasdeveloped,andthatinvolvesariskoffireelectricrock,orinjurytopersonshallbeevaluatedusingtheappropriateadditionalcomponentandend-productrequirementsasdeteminednecessarytomaintainthelevelofsafetyfortheuseroftheproductasoriginallyanticipatedbytheintentofthisStandard.

2.1Forthepurposeoftheserequirements,thetermcapacitoralsoreferstocombinationsofcapacitorandresistors.

3Glossary

3.1ACROSS-THE–LINECAPACITOR-Acapacitorthatisconnectedeitheracrossasupplycircuitorbetweenonesideofasupplycircuitandconductivepartthatmaybeconnectedtotheearthground.

3.2Antenna-couplingcapacitor–Acapacitorthatisconnectedfromanantennaterminaltocircuitwithinanappliance.

3.3Double-protectioncapacitor–Acapacitorthatprovidesprotectionagainsttheriskofelectricshockinaccordancewiththerequirementsfordoubleprotectioninthestandardfortelevisionreceiversandhigh-voltagevideoproduce,UL1410.

3.4LINE-BY-PASSCAPACITOR–Acapacitorthatisconnectedbetweenonesideofasupplycircuitandanaccessibleconductivepart.

5.1Ifavalueformeasurementisfollowedbyavalueinotherunitsinparentheses,thesecondvaluemaybeonlyapproximate.Thefirststatevalueistherequirement.

6.1Anonmetallicmaterialusedasallorpartoftheenclosureofacapacitorshalleither:

a)Beclassified94V-0asthedeterminedbythetestdescribedinthestandardfor

testforflammabilityofplasticMaterialsforpartsindevicesandappliances,UL94,or

b)Performacceptablywhentestedinaccordancewithcapacitorflammabilitytest,section9.

6.2Amaterialclassified94V-0orbetterusing1/16-inch(1.6mm)thickflat-stocksamplesmaybeusedinlesserthickness

7Sleeving,Tape,TupingandWireinsulation

7.1Sleeving,tape,tubingandwireinsulationshallberatedforthevoltageinvolvedandthetemperatureattainedunderanyconditionofactualuse.Tapeshallbeflame-retardant.Sleeving,tubing,andwireinsulationshallhaveaflameretardantratingVW-1

8Spacings

8.1General

8.1.1Thespacingbetweenuninsulatedlivepartsofoppositepolarity,andbetweenanuninsulatedlivepartandadeadmetalpart,shallnotbelessthantheapplicablevaluespecifiedintable8.1

8.2Double-protectioncapacitor

8.2.1Thespacingbetweenuninsulatedlivepartsofoppositepolarity,andanuninsulationlivepartandadeadmetalpartshallnotbelessthan1/8inch(3.2mm)oversurfaceorthroughair.

8.2.2Thespacingbetweenuninsulationedlivepartofthesamepolaritybutofadifferentpotentialshallnotbelessthan1/16inch(1.6mm)oversurfaceorthroughair,seefigure8.1.

Forthepurposeofjudgingspacingsindoule-protectioncapacitors:

a)CapacitorelementsAandDareconsideredtobeatoppositepolarityand

b)CapacitorelementsAandB,CandD,AandC,andBandDareconsideredtobeatdifferentpotientialbutofthesamepolarity.

9CapacitorFlammabilityTest

9.1IFanonmetalliccapacitorenclosurematerialisnotclassified94V-0,threesamplesofthecapacitorshallbesubjectedtothree15-secondapplicationsofatestflame,theperiodbetweenapplicationsoftheflamebeing15seconds.Thematerialoftheenclosureisacceptableifeachcapacitordoesnotcontinuetoflameformorethan15secondsafterthefirstandsecondapplications,andfornotmorethan60secondsafterthethirdapplication.

9.2Forthetestrequiredby9.1,asupplyofgashavingheatingvalueofapproximately1000btupercubicfoot(37.6MJ/m3)atnormalpressureand3/8inch(9.5mm)diameterthrillburneraretobeused.Thetestflameistobe3/4inch(19mm)highwithairportsoftheburnerclosed.

9.3Eachcapacitoristobemountedinapositionthatismostconductivetotheignitionofthecapacitorandwhichispermittedbythephysicalcondstructionofthecapacitor.Thetipofthetestflameistobeappliedatanylocationonthebodyofeachcapacitor.

10DielectricVoltage-withstandtest

10.1Asreceivedsamples

10.1.1Tencapacitorsshallwithstandwithoutindicationofunacceptableperformancefor1minuteasinusoidalpotential,havingafrequencyof60hertz,appliedfromleadtolead.Thepotentialshallbe1250voltsrmsforcapacitorsratedupto125volts,and1500Vrmsforcapacitorsrated126~250v
