Introduction

1.1Scope

Thisdocumentcontainsahigh-leveldescriptionoftheRelease99Featuresofthe3rdGenerationMobileSystemdevelopedwithinthe3rdGenerationPartnershipProject(3GPP).ItispartofaseriesofdocumentsdevelopedbyMCCtoprovideacompleteoverviewofthetechnicalcontentofeachRelease.

AFeatureisdefinedasaneworsubstantiallyenhancedfunctionalitywhichrepresentsaddedvaluetotheexistingsystem(see3GPPTR21.900).Afeatureshouldnormallyembodyanimprovedservicetothecustomerand/orincreasedrevenuegenerationpotentialtothesupplier.

Featuresareasindependentaspossiblefromeachother,andrelationshipsbetweenfeaturesareclarifiedhere.

Theconceptanddefinitionof“Feature”wasintroducedinRelease4,i.e.intheReleasefollowingRelease99.Whenelaboratingthisdocument,MCChasappliedthe“feature”concepttotheworkdoneforRelease 99,sothe“Release99Features”areintroducedbythisdocumentandwerenotofficiallydefinedassuchby3GPP.Also,theuseofthe3GPPWorkPlanwasintroducedinRelease4,i.e.therewasnoofficialtrackingoftheworkprogressinRelease99,sothisdocumentwaswrittenfromadetailedreviewofallspecifications,changerequests,meetingcontributionsandreports,etc.

Thefeatureshavebeengroupedintodifferentsections:

-UMTSfeatures,

-featuresapplicabletobothGSMandUMTS,

-GSMfeatures,

-chargingandtestingactivities,

-GSMfeaturestransposedtoUMTSand

-“Features”notbringinganyadditionalservice.

Foreachfeature(orindependentitem),referencesaregiventoguidethereaderonhowtodeepenhisknowledgeofthesubject:

theWorkItemDescription(WID),whenavailable,aswellasthelistofimpactedspecificationsareprovidedinthebeginningofthesectiondescribingthefeature.Onlythelistofimpactedspecificationsisprovidedhere.TheexactimpactonagivenspecificationduetoagivenfeatureisdescribedintheChangeRequest(CR)listwhichcanbefoundattheendofthespecification,orintheCRdatabase,whichprovidesthefulllistofCRsforall3GPPspecifications.Allthisinformationisavailableonthe3GPPwebsite,asdescribedbelow.

Thesecondpartofthisintroductioncontainsglobalreferences,andprovideslinkstothe3GPPSpecifications,thetemporarydocuments(tdocs),theWorkItemDescriptions(WIDs)andtheCRdatabase.

Aspecificationisoriginallydraftedandmaintainedbya“rapporteur”(theeditor),whocompilesthecontentsfromdiscussionsintheWGsandTSGs.Whenitisconsideredtobe80%complete,itisbroughtunder"changecontrol".Thereafter,changestothespecificationcanonlybemadeusingChangeRequeststhatareusuallyagreedbyconsensusintheWorkingGroupresponsibleforthespecification,andthenformallyapprovedbytherelevantTechnicalSpecificationGroup.

TheChangeRequestdatabasecontainsallavailableinformationonChangeRequests,includingaWorkItemcode,aChangeRequestnumberthatisuniquewithinthespecification(differentversionsarepossible,butonlyoneversioncaneverbeapproved),thestatusofeachChangeRequestandreferencestorelevanttemporarydocumentnumbersandmeetings.Thisdatabaseisavailableat:
