Asoneoftheworld’smostfamouswritersand“theShakespeareofAmerican”NathanielHawthorneplayedacriticalroleinthehighlightofromanticnovel.TheScarletLetter,NathanielHawthorne’srepresentativework,isaclassicalnovelinAmericanliteratureinthe19thcentury.Thenovelisconcerninghowfemininepursuetruelove,challengetheocracy,patriarchyandpoliticalpowerinPuritansociety.ThisthesisintroducehowthecommunitiesinthetownaredeeplyinfluencedbyPuritanism.TheheroineHesterPrynneandArthurDimmesdale,thetown’sreverendpriest,engagesintheactofadulterybabygirlnamedPearl.AspunishmentHesterforcedtowear“Adultery”.AndScarletLetterhaswinedtheworld-wideattention.EspeciallythefemaleHesterPrynnehasattractedlargenumbersofscholarstoanalysisherpersonality.
