Thechildrenwereextremelyquicktoaccepttheideaof“MommyandMe”time.Christie’sdaughter,McKenzie,wentfirst.Whenshereturned,theotherchildrenshoweredherwithtonsofquestions.McKenziewassmilingbroadly.Christielookedrefreshedandhappy.“She’slikeadifferentchildwhenthere’snooneelsearound,”Christiesharedwithmequickly.Withhermotheralltoherself,McKenziedidn’thavetomakeanefforttogainattention.

JustasChristiehadnoticedchangesinMcKenzie,Ialsodiscoveredsomethingdifferentineachofmychildren.Forexample,Iamalwayssurprisedwhenmydaughter,whoisseldomclosetome,holdsmyhandfrequently.Mystuttering(口吃的)son,Tom,doesn’tstutteronceduringouractivitiessincehedoesn’thavetostruggleforachancetospeak.Andanotherson,Sam,who’salwaysafollowerwhenaroundotherchildrenshinesasaleaderduringourtimestogether.

ThecaveheldthreeimportantevidencesaboutthebehavioroftheseStoneAgepeople.

First,theresearchersfoundtheremainsofallkindsofshellfish.Thepeoplewholivedinthecaveprobablycollectedthesecreaturesfromrockyshoresandtidepoolsandbroughtthemtothecavetoeat.

TheresearchersconsidertheearlyAfricansmovetotheSouthAfricancoastbetween195,000and130,000yearsago.Aroundthattime,theclimateinlandturnedrelativelycoldanddry.Therefore,therewerefewerplantsandanimalstoeatawayfromthecoast.

Whentheseancientpeoplemovedtothecoast,theyprobablyexperiencedamajorculturalshift,theresearcherssuspect.That’sbecauseobservationsofmodemhunter-gatherersocietiessuggestthatmenaremorelikelytohuntforbiganimalswhenpeopleliveinland.Onthecoast,womenplayamoreimportantroleinprovidingfoodbygatheringplantsandshellfish.

Asforthesecondclue,theresearchersunearthed57piecesofreddishpigment(颜料).Theresearchersthinkthatthecavehabitantsusedthepaintforcoloringtheirbodiesorforotherceremonies.Symbolicbehaviorisaclearlyhumanfeature.

Finally,thesearchdiscoveredover1,800stonetools,includingwellcraftedblades(刀片).Thesebladescameinvarioussizes.Thesmallestwerejustlessthanahalfinchwide.Ancientpeoplemayhaveattachedthesebladestotheendofasticktomakespearsorothertools.

Sherecorded30volunteers’voicesandaskedeachtoratetheothers’attractivenessonarangefromonetonine.EachparticipantwasfromwesternAmerica,withsimilaraccents.Thepeopleweassessedwereallinthesamedialectgroup,buttheyshowedthatdialecttodifferentdegrees.

“Weseemtolikepeoplewhosoundlikewesound,andwelikepeoplewhofitwithinwhatweknow,”DrBabelsaid.Shealsofoundthatbreathyvoicesinwomen—typifiedbythefamousAmericanactressMarilynMonroe-wereseenasmoreattractive.
