AnotherlandmarkmomentforWashingtonwasthewinteratValleyForge.In1777,Washingtonledanarmyofmorethan11,000troopsintoValleyForgeinPennsylvania,wherethearmysufferedthroughacoldwinterthatclaimedthelivesof3,000men.Whenthespringarrived,insteadofademoralized,beatengroupofsoldiers,thearmyemergedbattleready,andabletocontinuethefightagainsttheEnglishinNewYork.Thearmywasabletosurvivethefiercewinterbecauseofthetraining,andpreparednessofWashington'sofficers.Washingtonearnedthenickname,"TheFatherofHisCountry,"becauseofhismilitaryintelligence,andhisconcernforthepeopleoftheUnitedStates.
