Financialbackingforlaughterandhumorresearchisweak — soweakthatwhen MaryBennett,directoroftheWesternKentuckyUniversitySchoolofNursing,wantedtolookintotheeffectoflaughterontheimmune(免疫)system,shefoundherselfaskingotherresearchersforequipmentfromtheirlabs.“It'sreallyhardtogettakenseriouslywhenyousayyoustudylaughter,”shesays.

Butherstudyof33healthywomen,publishedin2003,showedthatthosewholaughedatahumorousmoviehadhigherlevelsofnaturalkillercellactivity,whichincreasedtheirabilitytofightoffdisease.However,theeffectwasseenonlyinthesubjectswholaughedoutloud,notinthosewhoquietlywatchedthecomedy.
