Thisisatutorialwhichwillhelpyoutocreatealovely,magiclookingwoodfullofglowingflowers,goldeninsectsandnicebirdiecoveredinglossyfeathers.We'llmakeallthesecreaturesfromasinglesourceimage-stunningpictureofGoldInteriortakenbyHilleke.

Step1

OpentheGoldInteriorimageinPhotoshopandwithdoublemouseclickturnthebackgroundintoalayer.

Tochangetheorientationofthewholeimage,selectImagemenu,ImageRotationandchoose90CW（clockwise）.

CreateanewGroupoflayersnamedBackgroundandcallthefirstlayerthesamename-Background.Setyourforegroundcolorto#152328andbackgroundcolorto#020b11.GotoGradientTool,selectForegroundtoBackgroundRadialGradientanddrawitverticallyfromtoptobottomofthecanvas.

Justalittletip:

Youhavenoticedthatthereisnolayerwiththeoriginalsourceimageonmyscreenshots.Ihavecleaneditnottodistractyou,butitisgoodtokeepthesourcelayerbelowalllayersandgroupsinLayerspalettesothatyoucaneasilyselectanypartofitwhennecessary.

Step2

Inthisstepwe’llcontinueusingGradientTool.CreateanewlayerwithinBackgroundgroup,gotoGradienttoolandthistimechoosePurple,Green,GoldGradientfromtheGradientpicker（YoucanfindthisPurple,Green,GoldGradientinColorHarmonies2gradientsset）.KeepselectedtheRadialgradientoptionanddrawthechosengradientdiagonallyfromtoprighthandsidetobottomlefthandsideofthecanvas.NamethislayerPurple,Green,GoldGradientandloweritsOpacityto11%.

Step3

CreateanewlayerplacedabovePurple,Green,GoldGradientlayerinBackgroundgroup.Setforegroundcolorto#A8D5D3andBackgroundColorto#102023,gotoFilter,Render,Clouds,thenapplyFilter,Render,DifferenceCloudsandpressCtrl+Ftorepeatthelastfilter.SelectEraserTool,chooseSoftBrushofbigsizeandloweredopacity,30%approximately,anduseittoerasethebottom1/3ofthelayer.NamethisLayerCloudsOverlay,setitsBlendModetoOverlayandreduceopacityto10%.

Step4

DuplicatetheCloudsOverlaylayerandgotoFilter,Blur,MotionBlur,Angle90degrees;Distance170px.ChangetheBlendModetoScreenandOpacityto8%.NamethelayerCloudsMotionBlurandleaveontopofalllayersinBackgroundgroup.

Step5

Letuscreatethebranchesonwhichourmagicbirdisgoingtoalight.

UsePolygonalLassotooltoselectaniceportionofthegoldenornaments（pleaseseetheimagetothisstep）andwithCtrl+Jplacetheselectedpartonanewlayer.Clickwiththerightmousekeyonit,selectBlendingOptions,tickBevelandEmbossandapplythefollowingsettings:

Step6

WearetodosomenicetransformationsinActionspaletteinordertocreateanicebranchesforthebird.

GotoWindow,selectActionsinordertoappearyourActionspaletteonthescreen.ClickontheNewActioniconandyou'llseeonyourscreenNewActiondialogbox.Leaveitsnameasdefault-Action1andpressRecordbuttontostartrecording.DuplicatethepreviouslycreatedBranchlayerandontheduplicateapplyEdit,FreeTransform,holddownShiftandpresstwiceUpperArrowkeytonudge,inFreeTransformSettingschangeAngleofRotationto2.3degrees.

DonotpressEnterasweusuallydotoapplychosentransformation.GoimmediatelytoEdit,Transform,Warpandslightlychangetheshape.Nowit’stimetohitEnterkeytoapplybothtransformations.PressalsoStopPlaying/RecordingbuttononyourActionsPalette,thenpress26timesPlaySelectionbuttononthesamepalette.Youmusthave27Branchlayers-fromBranchtoBranchcopy26.Mergeallofthemintoonelayer,namedBranch.YoucanselectAction1inyourpaletteanddragittotheDeleteicontogetridofitandtogetreadyforthenextaction.

Youmusthaveanicegoldenbranchnow.

Step7

Duplicateafewtimesthebranchlayercreatedinthepreviousstep（Iduplicateditsixtimes）.OneachoftheduplicatesapplyEdit,Transform,Warp.UsealsoEdit,FreeTransformtoresizetheduplicatedbranches.

ThehotkeysforTransformationsareCtrl+T,thenrightclickandchoosethetransformationyouprefertoapplyfromthedialogbox.

Onceyouaresatisfiedwiththetransformations,arrangeeachofthebranchestomakeanicepartofamysticgoldentree.IntegrateallbrancheslayersinonegroupnamedBranches.Lookatthefollowingscreenshot.Ihavenamedeachbranchlayeraccordingtoitsplace.

Step8

Inordertolookthebranchesmorebizarre,selectathingoldenlineornamentfromthewall,duplicateitfourmoretimesandresizeeachofthecopiedlayerstofittherespectivebranch.MergealllayersinoneandnameitBranchSticks.PlaceitatthebottomofBranchesgroupoflayers.

CreateanewlayerlocatedaboveBranchStickslayer.TakeSoftBrushof20pxsizeandforegroundcolor#7cfafftopaintthe“stamens”ofthetreeblossoms.Reducethislayer’sopacityto57%andtogivethestamensmorereliefapplyBlendingOptions,BevelandEmboss:

CreateanewlayerplacedbelowSoftBrushlayerwithintheBrancheslayersgroup.Setforegroundcolorto#aebecb,takeFuzzbal（default）brushandpainttheblossoms.NamethelayerFuzzballBrushandafterrightclickonittochooseBlendingOptionsapplytoitthefollowinglayerstyles:

Nowweshouldstartwithshapingthebird.Incaseyoupreferdrawingtowarping,youcanuseyourownsketchofabird.Ichosetowarpthebird’sbasefromselectedpartofthesourceimage.Ifyouprefertofollowmyway,takeyourEllipticalMarqueetool,selectanicebrownishpartofthecolumnandbymeansofEdit,FreeTransform（toincreasethesizeofselectedellipse）andEdit,Transform,Warpshapetheheadofthebird.

Step11

Herewecontinuewiththebirdie’sbody.Useagainellipticalselectionandtheupperdescribedtransformations（FreeTransformandWarp）toshapethebody.KeepeachpartofthebirdonaseparatelayerandcombinealllayersintoanewgroupcalledBird.

Step12

CarryonyourworkwithinBirdgroupoflayers.Letusaddwingsandlegstoourbird.TakeagainEllipticalMarqueeTooltoselectovalpartofthecolumn.GotoEditmenu,chooseFreeTransformandEdit,Transform,Warptoshapethewing.Createthesamewaytheleg.

Step13

Usethesametoolstomakethetail.Nowthebirdisalmostreadybutitlooksflat.DuplicatebothpreviouslycreatedlayersinStep12andplacethembelowallbird’slayers.Transformthemslightlytoshowthatthebirdhastwowingsandlegs.Ihaveusedwhitebackgroundforyourconvenience-toseehowthebird’sshapelooks.TakealsointoconsiderationmyLayerspaletteandthewayIhaveplacedalllayersintoBirdSamplegroup.

Step14

Selectadarkerornamentwithmorerelieftoshapethebird’slegs.GotoEdit,Transform,Warpandturntheselectedpartintolegsandclaws.UseBurnTooltogivevolumeandshadows.Inordernottooverloadmy.psdfileImergedalllayersformingthebirdlegintoonelayercalledRightLeg.AfterthatduplicatedRightLeglayer,usedEdit,FreeTransform（includingitsrotatingfunction）andEdit,FreeTransform,Warptochangetheshapeoftheleg,renamedtheduplicatedlayerLeftlegandplacedbelowtheoriginallayer.

AsyoucanseeinmyLayersPalette,IhaveputbothleglayersinonegroupcalledBirdLegs.

Step15

Inthefollowingstepswearegoingtoaddsomefeatherstothebird.

FirstlycreateanewgroupoflayersnamedBirdandplaceitaboveBirdSamplegroup.

WithinBirdsgroupoflayerscreateasubgroupcalledHeadFeathers.Therewe’llplaceallshapesthatwillcoverthebirdsheadasfeathers.

Selectapartofthebalcony,pressCtrl+TandapplyFreeTransformandWarptogiveitpetallikeshape.Scaleitdownmoretomakeitsmaller-weneedthisshapetocreatetheneckfeathers.Don’tforgettozoominyourimageunlessyouwanttolooseyoursightinthenameofPhotoshop.CalltheshapeHeadFeatherandplaceitasafirstlayerinHeadFeathersgroup.DuplicatethisHeadFeatherlayerandgotoEdit,
