In1686,aFrenchshipcalledtheBelledisappearedinTexas’sMatagordaBay.Itwouldbemorethan300yearsbeforearchaeologists(考古学家)wereabletodigthesite.Itturnedouttobewellworththewait.TheBellecouldprovideimportantịnformationabouthistoricaleventsandthelastjourneyofthefamousFrenchexplorer(探险家),Rene-RobertCavelier,SieurdeLaSalle,orRobertdeLaSalle.TheBellewasamongfourFrenchshipsthatwereheadedforthemouthoftheMississippiRiver.TheshipssailedfaroffcourseandlandedonthecoastofTexas,about400milesfromwheretheyhadmeanttogo.

Peopleontheshipfacedmanydifficulties,suchasfightswiththenativeAmericanpeopleanddisease,buttheyfinallybuilttheirhomesinaplacetheynamedFortSt.Louis.Duringastrongwinterstorm,theBelleendedupontheseafloorinMatagordaBay.

In1995,afteryearsofsearching,anarchaeologistnamedJ.BartoArnoldfinallycameacrossthewreckage(残骸)oftheBelle.Ittooknearlyayearforarchaeologiststodigthesite.Theyusedacofferdamthatmadetheworkofthearchaeologistsmucheasier.Itwasalarge,specialwallthatwasplacedaroundthewreckageoftheship.Workerstookallwateroutoftheareainsidethecofferdamsothatthearchaeologistsdidn’tneedtoworkinthewater.

Aftersomanyyears,youmightthinkalmosteverythingwouldhavedisappearedbecauseseawaterwoulddestroythembitbybit.Luckily,thethickmud,orwetearth,thatcoveredtheshiphelpedsavethethingsthatmighthavebeenlostforever.
