Crosstunnelwithsmallintervalisanewkindofstructureemergedinrecentyears.Theadoptionofcrosstunnelwithsmallintervalisnotonlytomeetthespecialrequirementsofunusualgeologicalconditionandoveralllinearroute,butalsoconducivetotheoverallprogrammingandoptimization,withsignificanteconomic,socialandenvironmentalbenefits.Howeverthedesignandconstructionofthiskindoftunnelremainsmanytechnicalquestionstobesolved.Forinstance,whenthenewtunnelisclosetoexistingtunnel,theseismicwaveinducedbyblastingendangersthesafetyandstabilizationofthesurroundingrockandtheliningofexistingtunnel.Withtherapidurbanizationprocessandthefurtherutilizationofundergroundspace,thecrosstunnelwithsmallintervalwillbeanincreasingnumber.Theresearchofitsdesignandconstructiontechnologies,impactsonexistingstructure,havehighsignificanceonbothacademicstudyandengineeringpractice.

TheShizhuyuanploymetallicminewasminingbyroom-and-pillaropenstopemethodformore10years.After36designedroomsareminedout,left2,600,000m3mined-outareaswith8000m2ofthemaximumcontinuedexposedfaceofroofwithoutfillingforsomereasons.Fortheminesustainabledevelopmentandthesafemining,onemainlyissuesishowtomanagementofmined-out-areasandthepillarmining.Sosomestudywascarriedout:

1)Aftertheengineeringgeologicalevaluation,themechanicsparametersofrockmasswasderivedbygeneralizedHoek-Brownfailurecriterion.

2)Cavability(i.e.cavingareas)oftheShizhuyuanploymetallicminewasworkedoutbyLaubscherandextendedMathewsmethods.

3)Forthepurposeofsafetymining,thegroundpressuremonitoringsystemsuchasAcousticEmission(AE),displacementandpressuremethodthatsuitforthehardrockweredesignedandinstalled.Thetechnologicalroutesofthegroundmonitoringandanearlywarningcasearelisted.

Thetermsgroundcontrolandstratacontrol,whichhereareusedinterchangeably,datebacksome60yearstotheearly1930swhentheuseofrockboltswaspioneeredintheUnitedStated.ThefirstinternationalconferenceonrockpressureandgroundcontrolwasheldinLiege,Belgium,in1951.Inessence,groundcontrolmeansmaintainingrockmassstabilitybycontrollingthemovementofexcavationsintheground,whichcanbeeitherrockandsoil.Thisisaspecialtyengineeringfieldthatisimportantbecausethedesignofundergroundexcavationis,tolargeextent,thedesignofundergroundsupportsystemssuchaspillarsandrockreinforcement.

Althoughtoday,groundcontrolisnolongersolelyaminingartsincemuchofitcanqualifyasanengineeringscience,theapplicationofrockandsoilmechanicsprinciplesandtechniquesinday-to-daymineplanninganddesignisstillnotcommon.Itishopedthattheup-to-dateknowledgedigestcontainedinthischapterwillcontributetobetterdisseminationandapplicationofground-controlconceptsandtechniques,someofwhichhavebeenavailableformanyyearsbutwhichminingengineershavenotavailedthemselvesfully.
