Inthatmoment,Iactuallybelievethatmylifewasmoredifficultthananyoneelsearoundme.LifehandedmeaperfectlywrappedlessonthatopenedmyeyestothefactthatthroughmysufferingIhadallowedmyselftobecomeblindedbymyself-pity.
Thelessonpresenteditselfinahealthcrisis.Ihadcomplicationfromasurgicalprocedureandendedupbeinghospitalizedforfourdays.Iwasinaextremeamountofpainduringthistime.Betweenthephysicalpainandtheemotionalpainofgrief,Iwasanabsolutemess.
IshouldalsotellyouthatIamaRegisteredNurse.Asanurse,itishardtobeonthereceivingendofgriefendofmedicalasthepatient.
ThefirstthreenightsthatIwasinhospital,thesamenursetookcareofme.Shewasyoung,maybeinhermidtolate20s,andshehardlyinteractedwithmeatallthefirsttwonights,otherthantogivememedicationasscheduled.SheobviouslyhadnoideahowmuchemotionalpainIwasin.Howhardisittoaskyourpatienthowshe’sfeelingIwroteheroffasabadnursewhohadlittleempathy,andremainedabsorbedinmyownemotionalandphysicalpain.

Wewentontotalkandshareourstoriesaboutourlatehusbandsandchildren.Iliketothinkthatwehelpedeachotherabitthatnight.
WehadmuchmoreincommonthanIwouldhavebelieved.Wewerebothwidowedsinglemomswithyoungchildren,andnurses.But,thatwaswherethesimilaritiesended.Herhusbandhadnoinsurancepolicy.Shehadverylittlefamilysupport.Shewasworkingpaychecktosupportherboys.Iwashumbled.IrealizedhowmuchIhadtobegratefulfor.And,frankly,Ineversawlifethesamewayafterthisexperience.
Thisexperiencewasalife-changingeventforme.Ihadalwayspridedmyselfonbeinganempatheticperson,butIrealizednowthatIhadnotreallyunderstoodwhatbeingempatheticmeant.
Totrulybeempathetic,youmustbeabletoseebeyondyourownpaintobewitnesstothepain.Ineverlookedatanotherpersoninthesamewayafterthisexperience.
ThecashiercheckingmeoutatthegrocerystorewhoseemedrudeandinahurryWhoknowswhatwasgoinginhisday,week,lifeMaybeherecentlylostaspouseorachild.Maybehehasexperiencedcompoundedlosses.Ihadnowayofknowingwhatthismanwasgoingthrough.WhowasItojudgehim?
Ithankdeathforveryfewthings.Thegiftofempathyformyfellowman,andunderstandingthatweallsufferinwaysthataren’talwaysvisible,arepresentsfromdeathIwillalwaysbegratefulfor.
