Onmostplatforms,tobackuptoandrestorefromsequentialmediasuchastape,youmustintegrateamediamanagerwithOracle.AmediamanagerisnotanOracleproductandmustbeobtainedfromathird-partyvendor.IfyouchoosetouseRMANwithamediamanager,thenyoumustobtainallproduct-specificinformationfromthevendor.

ThissectiondescribesthegenericstepsforconfiguringRMANforusewithamediamanager.TheactualstepsdependonthemediamanagementproductthatyouinstallandtheplatformonwhichyouarerunningOracle.

PrerequisitesforUsingaMediaManagerwithRMAN

BeforeyoucanbeginusingRMANwithamediamanager,youmustinstallitandmakesurethatRMANcancommunicatewithit.Instructionsforthisprocedureshouldbeavailableinthemediamanagervendor'ssoftwaredocumentation.

Dependingontheproductthatyouareinstalling,thefollowingbasicstepsapply:

1.Installandconfigurethemediamanagementsoftwareonthetargethostorproductionnetwork.NoRMANintegrationisrequiredatthisstage.

2.Ensurethatyoucanmakenon-RMANbackupsofoperatingsystemfilesonthetargetdatabasehost.Thisstepmakeslatertroubleshootingmucheasier.Refertoyourmediamanagementdocumentationtolearnhowtobackupfilestothemediamanager.

3.Obtainandinstallthethird-partymediamanagementmoduleforintegrationwiththeOracleserver.ThismodulemustcontainthelibrarythatOracleloadswhenaccessingthemediamanager.

Ifyouhavenotperformedtheprecedingsteps,thendonotproceedwiththemediamanagementconfiguration.

HowOracleInteractswiththeMediaManager

Tomakebackupstoamediamanager,RMANmustcommunicatewithamediamanagementlibrary.TheprocedureforusingRMANwithamediamanagerinOracle9ihasnotchangedfrompreviousreleases.

Theloadingofamediamanagerlibraryisoperatingsystemspecific.WhenyouRMANallocateschannels,itusesthefollowingalgorithmwhendecidingwhichlibrarytoload:

1.AttemptstoloadthelibraryindicatedbytheSBT_LIBRARYparameterintheALLOCATECHANNELorCONFIGURECHANNELcommand.IftheSBT_LIBRARYparameterisnotspecified,thenOracleproceedstothenextstep.

2.Attemptstoloadthedefaultmediamanagementlibrary.Thefilenameofthedefaultlibraryisoperatingsystemspecific.OnUNIX,thelibraryfilenameis$ORACLE_HOME/lib/libobk.so,withtheextensionnamevaryingaccordingtoplatform:

.so,.sl,.a,andsoforth.OnWindowsNTthelibraryisnamed%ORACLE_HOME%\bin\orasbt.dll.

Note:

ThedefaultmediamanagementlibraryfileisnotpartofthestandardOracleinstallationasinpreviousreleases,soyoucanonlycreateitbyinstallingthird-partymediamanagementsoftware.

3.IfOracleisunabletolocatethedefaultlibraryinthepreviousstep,thenRMANissuesanORA-27211errorandexits.

Wheneverchannelallocationfails,OraclewritesatracefiletotheUSER_DUMP_DESTdirectory.Thefollowingshowssampleoutput:
