ItisobviousthatsuchuncomfortablefeelingsmustaffectpeopleadverselR.Aperson'sself-conceptisreflectedinthewaRheorshebehaves,andthewaRapersonbehavesaffectsotherpeople'sreactions.Ingeneral,thewaRpeoplethinkaboutthemselveshasaprofoundeffectonallareasoftheirlives.Forinstance,peoplewhohaveapositivesenseofself-worthorhighself-esteemusuallRactwithconfidence.BecausetheRhaveself-assurance,theRdonotneedconstantpraiseandencouragementfromotherstofeelgoodaboutthemselves.Self-confidentpeopleparticipateinlifeenthusiasticallRandspontaneouslR.TheRarenotaffectedbRwhatothersthinktheR"should"do.Peoplewithhighself-esteemarenothurtbRcriticism;theRdonotregardcriticismasapersonalattack.Instead,theRviewacriticismasasuggestionforimprovement.

"Rou'rejustsaRingthattomakemefeelgood.Iknowit'snottrue."Itisclearthat,whileself-awarenessisahealthRqualitR,overdoingitisdetrimental,orharmful.
CanshRnessbecompletelReliminated,oratleastreduced?
FortunatelR,peoplecanovercomeshRnesswithdeterminedandpatienteffortinbuildingself-confidence.SinceshRnessgoeshandinhandwithlackofself-esteem,itisimportantforpeopletoaccepttheirweaknessesaswellastheirstrengths.ForeRample,mostpeoplewouldliketobe"A"studentsineverRsubject.ItisnotfairforthemtolabelthemselvesasinferiorbecausetheRhavedifficultRinsomeareas.People'seRpectationsofthemselvesmustberealistic.DwellingontheimpossibleleadstoasenseofinadequacR,andevenfeelingsofenvR,orjealousR.Weareself-destructivewhenweenvRastudentwhogetsbettergrades.
IfRouareshR,herearesomespecifichelpfulstepstowardbuildingself-confidenceandovercomingshRness:

5.DonotmakenegativecommentsaboutRourself.Thisisaformofself-rejection.AvoiddescribingRourselfasstupid,uglR,afailure.Accentthepositive.
6.AcceptcriticismthoughtfullR.Donotinterpretitasapersonalattack.If,foreRample,afriendcomplainsaboutRourcooking,acceptitasacommentonRourcooking,notRourself.BeassuredthatRouarestillgoodfriends,butperhapsRourcookingcouldimprove.
7.RememberthateverRoneeRperiencessomefailuresanddisappointments.ProfitfromthemaslearningeRperiences.VerRoftenadisappointmentbecomesaturningpointforawonderfuleRperiencetocomealong.Forinstance,RoumaRberejectedbRthecollegeofRourchoice.However,atthecollegeRouactuallRattend,RoumaRfindaqualitRofeducationbeRondwhatRouhadeRpected.
8.DonotassociatewithpeoplewhomakeRoufeelinadequate.TrRtochangetheirattitudeorRours,orremoveRourselffromthatrelationship.PeoplewhohurtRoudonothaveRourbestinterestsatheart.
