Today,I’mgoingtotellyousomethingaboutthehistoryoftheStatueofLiberty,oneofthemostfamousstatuesinAmerica.TomanypeoplethestatueisknownasLadyLiberty.ShestandsonasmallislandinNewYorkHarbornearthegreatcity.Inherrighthandsheholdsatorchwithagoldenflamehighaboveherhead.HerleftarmholdatabletwiththedateJuly4th,1776.ThatisthedatetheUnitedStatesdeclareditsindependence.Onherheadisacrownof7pointsthatrepresentsthe7continentsandthe7seas.Aroundherfeetisabrokenchainthatrepresentsoppression.
TheStatueofLibertywasagifttotheUnitedStatesfromthepeopleofFrance.ItsofficialnamewasLibertyenlighteningtheWorld.FrédéricBartholdibuiltthestatueinseveralparts.ThesewereshippedtoNewYorkandthenputtogetheronabase.ThestatuewasdedicatedinaceremonyonOctober28,1886.Thestatueitselfstandsabout46meterstall.Thedistancefromthegroundtothetopofthegoldentorchisabout23meters.Thestatuecanbeseenfromfaraway.ForthemanymillionsofimmigrantswhocametoAmericaonshipstheStatueofLibertywasthefirstthingtheysaw.Todaymorethan3-millionpeoplevisitthestatueofLibertyeachyear,mostcomebyfromaferryboatfromNewYork.Somevisitorsgoinsidethestatueandclimbashighasthecrowntolookdownattheharbor.Othersstandontheground,takephotographs,readthepoemandenjoybeingclosetoLadyLiberty.

“it’sanenormousissue.”
TheWHOishighlightingmentalhealthasaneglectedissue.Indevelopingcountriesahugenumberofpeople,upto85%,don’thaveaccesstoanyformofmentalhealthtreatment.Therearehugestaffingneeds.Therearenoservices.Expertssayabouthalfofallmentalhealthproblemsfirstappearbeforetheageof15.Thecountrieswiththehighestpercentagesofyoungpeopleareinthedevelopingworld.Thatmeanstheyarealsothecountrieswiththepoorestlevelsofmentalhealthresources.TheWHOsaysthatmanylowandmiddleincomecountrieshaveonlyonechildpsychiatristforevery1-4millionpeople.Worldwide,depressionistheleadingmentalhealthproblemandaleadingcauseofdisability.
In2009,WHOestimatedthatmorethan154millionpeoplesufferedfromdepression.But…fromthementalhealthfederationsaysotherkindsofdiseasesoftengetmoreattention.Shesayspeoplearemorefocusedoncommunicablediseasesandnotpayingenoughattentiontotheamountofdisabilitythereisfrommentalhealthconditionsandthesearetherealdisabilitieswherepeoplearenotabletoworktotheirfullcapacity,can’tearnanincome.Andthereisabigimpactonfamiliesaswell.Mrs.BurgersaysherorganizationandtheWHOarepushingtohavegovernmentsincludementalhealthcareintheirdevelopmentgoals.Shesaysthiscouldgreatlyimprovetheabilityoftreatmentandservicesworldwide.
