JimSinclair,directoroftheJointCouncilforQualifications,whichrepresentsexamboards,said:

“JCQmemberstakeazerotoleranceapproachtoallformsofcheatinginexaminationsincludingthepossessionofunauthorizeditemssuchasmobilephones,iPodsandMP3players.

“Cheatinginanexaminationisaninfringement违反oftheregulationsandmayleadtodisqualificationfromthecurrentexaminationandtheoverallqualification.”

FiguresfromCoequalshowthat4,415penaltieswerehandedouttoGCSEandA-levelstudentsinEngland,WalesandNorthernIrelandslastsummer,comparedwith4,156ayearearlier.

Almosthalfofcheatswerecaughtwith“unauthorizedmaterial”intheexamhall.Accordingtoofficials,thisincludednotesinthewrongformat出版物之开本;版式,studyguides,dictionariesandcalculators.

Morethan1,000studentswerecaughtcopyingfromothercandidates,while539pupilswerethrownoutfor“disruptive破坏性的;引起混乱的behavior”andswearing发誓;宣誓inexamrooms.

However,officialsinsistedthatthenumberofcheatsrepresentedonlyatinyfractionofexamtaken–just0.03percent.

Coequal’sreportalsorevealsthat88penaltieswereissuedtoteachersandotherexamstaff–anincreaseofalmostathirdinjust12months.

“Themajorityofthesepenaltieswereissuedasaresultofstaffgivinginappropriateassistancetocandidates,”saidthewatchdog.

Afurther70schoolsandcollegeswerewarnedafterfailingtofollowthestrictrequirementsofexamboards–ariseofmorethanathirdcomparedwith2008.

Reasonsincludedschoolsfailingto“adheretotherequirementsofanexamination,suchasopeningquestionpapersearlywithoutauthorization,allowingcandidatestositanexaminationatanincorrecttimeandthelackofappropriateinvigilation”,accordingtoCoequal.

AspokesmanfortheDepartmentforChildren,SchoolsandFamiliessaidinstancesofmalpracticearestill"extremelyrare".

"Weareabsolutelyclearthatanykindofcheatinginexamsisunacceptable,"hesaid.

"Coequalandtheawardingbodiestakeallallegationsofcheatingextremelyseriouslytoensuretheexamsystemisnotcompromised

AlthoughtheMinistryofEducationdoesnotindicatethestatusoftheexam,mostuniversitiespegtheexamresultstostudents'graduationanddegreecertificates.

TheCETcertificatesarealsowidelyacceptedbyemployersasreliableproofofgraduates'Englishproficiency.

DuringthemostrecentCETexamination,conductedonSaturday,theExaminationAuthorityofcentralChina'sHubeiProvincereceivedabout100reportsofcheating,despiterepeatedwarningsissuedtostudentsbeforetheexamination.

Theauthorityfoundthatstudentsrackedtheirbrainstofigureouthowtousevarioushigh-techdevicessuchascellphones,interphonesandwirelessearphonestocheat.Somestudentswereeveninjuredbylowqualitydevices.

AccordingtoChutitanMetropolisDaily,astudentinWuhanuseda"microearphone"whichis3mmindiametertocheat.Theearphoneissotinythatitslippedintothestudent'sauditorycanal,causingaperforationofthetympanic鼓室membrane.薄膜

SomeschoolleadersinnorthwestChina'sShaanxiProvincewerepunishedforfraudfollowingthisyear'scollegeentranceexamination.

LipongyonandnéeWinfang,principalanddeputyprincipalofYangXianHighSchool,weresuspendedfromworkandawaitedfurtherpunishmentaftertheywerefoundresponsibleinacheatingcaseduringnationalannualcollegeentranceexaminationonJune7and8,thelocalgovernmentsaidatapressconferenceonSaturdayinYangXianCountyinsouthernShaanxi.

"Furtherinvestigationisongoing,andsternpunishmentwillbegiventothepersonswhoareresponsibleforthecase,"SunJiangsu,thecountysecretaryofChineseCommunistPartyandheadofthecaseinvestigationgroup,saidatthepressconference.

Fourstudentswerecaughttakingtheentranceexamforothers,andLiandNéewerefoundresponsible.
