Afterbeingscreenedandtoldtheresults,theywereinterviewedabouttheirsmokingrelatedhealthbeliefs.Forabouthalfofthoseinwhomcancerwasnotfound,“Screeningloweredtheirmotivationforquitting,”theteamreportedinJulyinJAMAInternalMedicine.Theparticipantsfocusedonlyonlungcancer,ignoringotherpotentialharmofsmoking,theresearcherswrote.
AnationalstudypublishedfouryearsagofoundthatannualCTscreeningforlungcancerthreeyearsinarowcouldreducedeathsamongheavysmokersbyabout20%.
Inaninterview,Dr.Harrissaid,“Screeningisbeingbelievedbypeopleasanalternativetostoppingsmoking.Butstoppingsmokingwouldhavehugebenefitsfortheindividualandsociety.”Furthermore,smokingcausesmanyothercancers.
