Itisfairtosaythatithashighlightedboththenoblerandweakersidesofmodernpeople’scharacter.First,thewell-deservedaccolades.Ourvaliantandcaringhealthcaregivers,bothinthepublicandprivatesectors,havebornethebruntofit,especiallyduringtheearlystage,withnotafewofthemcontractingitandsomefightingfortheirlives.Ontheunedifyingside,numerousfellowpeoplehavetreatedtheirhealthcareprofessionallikepariahs.Someevenavoidthemlikeplagues.Thesewereutterlyirrationalandinexcusable.Attheotherextreme,therepeateduseoftheterm“super-infector”bysomeofthehealthauthoritiesandthemediatoemphasizethetransmissionofthisdiseasebyoneparticularpatienttonumerousotherswasratherunfortunateandshowedthelackofsensitivitytothefeelingsofthishaplessvictimandhisorherfamily.

Forexample,ifyouarethewithdrawntype,thenitmaybemoresuitableforyoutodoacademicresearchinauniversitythantoworkinaforeignenterprise,becausethelatterrequiresanoutgoingandsociablepersonality.Maybeitisnoteasyfortheintrovertedtodothatsortofjobwell.Additionally,ifyougetajobwhichfitsyourpersonality,youwillmorelikelysucceedinit.

AccordingtotheInternetusersurveybyresearchersfromtheChineseAcademyofSciencesCASS,atleast25percentofurbanadultsinChinahaveventuredonline,andthemajorityofthemsaidgoingonlinehasimprovedtheirlives.Thisisoneofthefindingsofasurveyof2,457Internetusersand1,484non-usersbetweentheagesof17and60in12citiesinChina.Thestudy,titled“2003China12Cities:
InternetUseandImpactSurveyReport,”hasbeenrecognizedbysomeasoneofthebestguidestoInternetusereleasedinthecountrysofar.Theresearchersfoundthatwhileover60percentofthesurveyedInternetuserssaidtheWebhelpedthemwiththeirstudiesandjobs,33.7percentsaiditmadenodifference.Only4percentsaidtheirstudyandworkhabitsdeteriorated.
Fifty-twopercentofrespondentsdescribedtheInternetasanimportantsourceofinformation,andover40percentsaidtheyregardtheInternetasaplaceforplayinggames,gatheringandchatting.Surfingandbrowsingwebsites,readingnewsanddealingwithe-mailarethethreemajoronlineactivitiesofChineseInternetusersfollowedbydownloadingandsearchingformusic,chatting,playinggamesanddownloadingsoftware.
Besidesgeographicdifferences,factorslikeeducation,income,gender,age,careersandfamilyarealsoinfluencingtheuseoftheInternet.Notsurprisingly,Internetuseishighestamongthoseagedbetween17and34years,whomadeup81percentoftherespondents.The35-60agegroupaccountedforonly19percent.Ninetypercentforthosewithcollegedegreesorhighergoonline,whileonly20percentofthosewithlessthanamiddleschooldiplomaareInternetusers.Home,Internetbars,theofficeandschooloccupythefirstfourplacesamongthechoicesoftheInternetaccesslocations.Lessthan7percentofusersusethecellphoneasoneoftheirInternetaccesses.
Internetshoppingremainsatthebottomofthelistofonlineactivities.Only17percentofusershavedoneso.Thetypesofproductspurchasedonlinevarywidely,rangingfrombooks,computerequipment,sportingandentertainmentgoods,travelarrangements,foodandcosmeticsandelectricappliances.Thefirstthreecategoriesmakeupmorethan10percentofsuchpurchases.AwidevarietyoffrequentlycitedreasonsfornotusingtheInternetincludeunavailabilityofgoodsandservicesontheInternet,inadequacyofcurrentcomputer,fearoftechnology,concernsaboutprivacyandsecurity,andworriesaboutviruses.(426words)
