  BenjaminMays,whoservedasthepresidentofMorehouseforalmost30years,understoodthattraditionbetterthananybody.Hesaid—andIquote—“ItwillnotbesufficientforMorehouseCollege,foranycollege,forthatmatter,toproduceclevergraduates—butratherhonestmen,menwhocanbetrustedinpublicandprivatelife—menwhoaresensitivetothewrongs,thesufferings,andtheinjusticesofsocietyandwhoarewillingtoacceptresponsibilityforcorrecting(those)ills.”

  Itwasthatmission—notjusttoeducatemen,buttocultivategoodmen,strongmen,uprightmen—thatbroughtcommunityleaderstogetherjusttwoyearsaftertheendoftheCivilWar.Theyassembledalistof37men,freeblacksandfreedslaves,whowouldmakeupthefirstprospectiveclassofwhatlaterbecameMorehouseCollege.Mostofthosefirststudentshadadesiretobecometeachersandpreachers—tobetterthemselvessotheycouldhelpothersdothesame.

  That’stheuniquesenseofpurposethatthisplacehasalwaysinfused—theconvictionthatthisisatraininggroundnotonlyforindividualsuccess,butforleadershipthatcanchangetheworld.

  Butthatdoesn’tmeanwedon’thavework—becauseifwe’rehonestwithourselves,weknowthattoofewofourbrothershavetheopportunitiesthatyou’vehadhereatMorehouse.
