“YoucanalwaystellaMorehouseMan—(applause)—butyoucan’ttellhimmuch.”(Applause.)Andthatmakesmytaskalittlemoredifficult,Isuppose.ButIthinkitalsoreflectsthesenseofpridethat’salwaysbeenpartofthisschool’stradition.
BenjaminMays,whoservedasthepresidentofMorehouseforalmost30years,understoodthattraditionbetterthananybody.Hesaid—andIquote—“ItwillnotbesufficientforMorehouseCollege,foranycollege,forthatmatter,toproduceclevergraduates—butratherhonestmen,menwhocanbetrustedinpublicandprivatelife—menwhoaresensitivetothewrongs,thesufferings,andtheinjusticesofsocietyandwhoarewillingtoacceptresponsibilityforcorrecting(those)ills.”
Itwasthatmission—notjusttoeducatemen,buttocultivategoodmen,strongmen,uprightmen—thatbroughtcommunityleaderstogetherjusttwoyearsaftertheendoftheCivilWar.Theyassembledalistof37men,freeblacksandfreedslaves,whowouldmakeupthefirstprospectiveclassofwhatlaterbecameMorehouseCollege.Mostofthosefirststudentshadadesiretobecometeachersandpreachers—tobetterthemselvessotheycouldhelpothersdothesame.
Acenturyandahalflater,timeshavechanged.Butthe“MorehouseMystique”stillendures.Someofyouprobablycameherefromcommunitieswhereeverybodylookedlikeyou.Othersmayhavecomehereinsearchofacommunity.AndIsuspectthatsomeofyouprobablyfeltalittlebitofcultureshockthefirsttimeyoucametogetherasaclassinKing’sChapel.Allofasudden,youweren’ttheonlyhighschoolsportscaptain,youweren’ttheonlystudentcouncilpresident.Youweresuddenlyinagroupofhighachievers,andthatmeantyouwereexpectedtodosomethingmore.
That’stheuniquesenseofpurposethatthisplacehasalwaysinfused—theconvictionthatthisisatraininggroundnotonlyforindividualsuccess,butforleadershipthatcanchangetheworld.
Dr.Kingwasjust15yearsoldwhenheenrolledhereatMorehouse.Hewasanunknown,undersized,unassumingyoungfreshmanwholivedathomewithhisparents.AndIthinkit’sfairtosayhewasn’tthecoolestkidoncampus—forthesuitshewore,hisclassmatescalledhim“Tweed.”ButhiseducationatMorehousehelpedtoforgetheintellect,thediscipline,thecompassion,thesoulforcethatwouldtransformAmerica.ItwasherethathewasintroducedtothewritingsofGandhiandThoreau,andthetheoryofcivildisobedience.Itwasherethatprofessorsencouragedhimtolookpasttheworldasitwasandfightfortheworldasitshouldbe.Anditwashere,atMorehouse,asDr.Kinglaterwrote,where“Irealizedthatnobody—wasafraid.”
Notevenofsomebadweather.Iaddedonthatpart.(Laughter.)Iknowit’swetoutthere.ButDr.Wilsontoldmeyouallhadachoiceanddecidedtodoitouthereanyway.(Applause.)That’saMorehouseMantalking.
Now,thinkaboutit.Forblackmeninthe’40sandthe’50s,thethreatofviolence,theconstanthumiliations,largeandsmall,theuncertaintythatyoucouldsupportafamily,thegnawingdoubtsbornoftheJimCrowculturethattoldyoueverydaythatsomehowyouwereinferior,thetemptationtoshrinkfromtheworld,toacceptyourplace,toavoidrisks,tobeafraid—thattemptationwasnecessarilystrong.
Andyet,here,underthetutelageofmenlikeDr.Mays,youngMartinlearnedtobeunafraid.Andhe,inturn,taughtotherstobeunafraid.Andovertime,hetaughtanationtobeunafraid.Andoverthelast50years,thankstothemoralforceofDr.KingandaMosesgenerationthatovercametheirfearandtheircynicismandtheirdespair,barriershavecometumblingdown,andnewdoorsofopportunityhaveswungopen,andlawsandheartsandmindshavebeenchangedtothepointwheresomeonewholooksjustlikeyoucansomehowcometoserveasPresidentoftheseUnitedStatesofAmerica.(Applause.)
