BodyLanguage

Bodylanguageisanimportantformofcommunicationthatisusedeverywhere,althoughwedon’toftenthinkaboutit.Somemessagesareunderstoodbypeoplearoundtheworldsimplybecausetheyarenotcommunicatedbywords.Forexample,inmanycountries,peoplenodtheirheadstoshowagreementandtheyputtheirfingersuptotheirmouthstoaskforsilence.

However,bodylanguageisuseddifferentlyindifferentcultures,Forexample,insomewesterncultures,peopleshrugtheirshoulderstoshowtheydon’tunderstandortheydon’tcareaboutsomething.Thisisn’tcommoninotherplaces.InAsiancountries,suchasJapan,peoplebowtoshowrespectwhentheygreeteachotherorsaygoodbye.Thisisn’tdoneintheWest.

Sometimes,peoplethinktheyknowaboutthebodylanguagecustomsofcertaincultures.butinfact,theydon'tknowenough.Takebowingasanexample.Manytravellersaren'tsurehowtoboworwhentobowwhileinJapan.Kissingisanotherexamplethatweneedtolearnabout.InmanyEuropeancultures,womenandchildrenarekissedoneachcheekbyfamilymembersorfriendswhentheymeetinthestreet.NewfriendsareoftengreetedwithakissonthecheekbyEuropeansatparties.Twomenusuallyshakehandsandput

theirfreehandoneachother’sshoulders.IntheMiddleEast,youmustbecarefulaboutyourfeet.Itisveryrudetoshowthebottomofyourshoewhenyourestonelegontopoftheother.Itisalsonotpolitetotouchpeoplewithyourshoes.

So,aswecansee,bodylanguageisjustasimportantasthespokenlanguagewhenwecommunicatewithpeoplefromothercultures.

Chinesewritingusesasystemofstrokes(笔画)tomakecharacters,whichrepresentasound,awordoranidea.LearningtoreadChinesetakesgreatmemorizationskillsandlearningtoreadwriteittakesmanyhoursofrepeatedpractice.Wordsmustbetogetherwiththeirsymbol,meaningandpronunciationEnglish,ontheotherhand,usesanAlphabet(字母),Eachletterandsomelettercombinations(组合)haveadifferentsound.Lettersareputtogethertomakeawordwithaparticularpronunciation.Onceyoulearnthebasicpatterns,youcansaymostnewwordsyousee.

Tone(语调)isusedverydifferentlyinChineseandEnglish.Chinesehasfourtones,whichusuallyconvey(表达)theactualmeaningofaword.InEnglish,toneofvoicecreatesemphasis(强调),followsapatternorconveystheemotions(情感)orattitude(态度)ofthespeaker.
