Thankyou.（Applause.）Boatarde.Thankyouverymuch.Please,please,everybodybeseated.ItisagreatjoytobehereinBrazil,andonbehalfofMichelleandmyself,IwanttothankthepeopleofBrasiliafortheincrediblywarmwelcomethatyou’veshownussincewearrived.

Iwanttomakeafewacknowledgements.Firstofall,IwanttothanktheBrazil-U.S.BusinessCouncilfortheoutstandingworkthatthey’redoing.TheNationalConferenceofIndustryandtheAmericanChamberofCommerceforBrazil,thankyouallforthegreatjobinhostingthisconference.

MyonlyregretisthatwemissedthepartybycomingafewweeksafterCarnival.（Laughter.）Maybethat'sthebest--sinceI'mnotsureIwouldhavehadthesamelevelofproductivityfrommystaff.（Laughter.）

IalsowanttothankallthebusinessandgovernmentofficialswhohavetraveledfromtheU.S.andalloverBraziltobeheretoday.AfterspendingthemorningdiscussingarangeofeconomicissueswithPresidentRousseffandtalkingwithsomeBrazilianandAmericanCEOs,Iwanttospeakwithyoutodayabouthowwecanworktogethertocreatenewjobsandnewopportunitiesinbothourcountries.

Inthelasttwocenturies,therehasneverbeenamomentofgreaterpromiseforBrazil.Younowhavetheseventhlargesteconomyintheworld,andoneofthefastestgrowingofanycountry.Inthespanofnearlyadecade,tensofmillionsofBrazilianshavebeenliftedoutofpoverty.Nearlyhalfofyourpopulationisnowconsideredmiddleclass.Insteadofrelyingonthehelpinghandofothercountries,youarenowextendingahandtohelpdevelopingnations.Yougrowmuchoftheworld’sfood,supplymuchofitsbiofuels,andwillhostthetwolargestinternationalsportingeventsintheworld.AndasImentionedatthejointpressconferencewithMadamPresidentRousseff,I'mstillalittlehurtabouttheOlympicscominghereinsteadofmyhometowninChicago.（Laughter.）ButIknowyou’lldoanoutstandingjob.

SowhathasbeenaccomplishedhereinBrazilisnothingshortofremarkable.It’softenbeensaidthatBrazilisacountryforthefuture.Well,thatfuturehasnowarrived.Anddespitetheuncertaintiesoverthelasttwoyears,Brazilhassteppedontotheworldstageasamajorfinancialandeconomicpower.

Youdidnotarriveatthispointbysimplychanceorgoodfortune.YoursuccesscamebecauseofhardworkandtheperseveranceoftheBrazilianpeople,theentrepreneurialspiritofmanyinthisroom,andthevisionofleaderslikePresidentsCardosoandLula.Whattheseleadersrealized,andwhatPresidentRousseffunderstands,isthatthesurestpathtoprosperityforBrazilinvolvesfreepeopleandfreemarkets.

Inaregionoftheworldwherethelegacyofcolonialismisstillfresh,therewasalegitimateconcerninthelastcenturythatopeningyoureconomiestomoretradewouldleadwealthiercountriestoextractresourceswithoutregardtoyourownnation’sdevelopment.Iunderstandthat.Atthesametime,manyLatinAmericannations,includingthisone,livedthroughdecadesofdictatorshipswhereclosedeconomiesfailedtoproducedecentstandardsoflivingforthevastmajorityofpeople.

Butoverthelastdecade,Brazilhasprovedtotheworldthatthereisanotherway.You’veshownthatparticipationintheglobaleconomycanleadtowidespreadopportunityathome.You’veshownthatthespiritofcapitalismcanthrivealongsidethespiritofsocialjustice.You’veshownthatdemocracyisstillthebestpathtoeconomicprogress,forwhengovernmentsareaccountabletotheirpeople,theirpeoplearemorelikelytoprosper.

IntheUnitedStatesofAmerica,wehavealwayssharedthesebeliefs.Likeyou,wethrewofftheyokeofcolonialismandestablishedourindependenceintheNewWorld.We,too,areavastnationofimmigrantsfromdifferentbackgroundsandcultureswhofindstrengthinourdiversity,strengthandunityinournationalpride.AndasthetwolargestdemocraciesandeconomiesintheWesternHemisphere,weshareabeliefthatallhumanbeingsdeservethechancetoshapetheirowndestinyandfulfilltheirGod-givenpotential.

Forallthesereasons,theUnitedStatessupportstheriseofBrazilasaglobalpower.That’swhyweworkedtoempower
