1.HistoryofMother'sDay

IntheU.S.,Mother'sDayisaholidaycelebratedonthesecondSundayinMay.Itisadaywhenchildrenhonortheirmotherswithcards,gifts,andflowers.FirstobservanceinPhiladelphia,in1907,itisbasedonsuggestionsbyJuliaWardHowein1872andbyAnnaJarvisin1907.

Althoughitwasn'tcelebratedintheU.S.until1907,thereweredayshonoringmotherseveninthedaysofancientGreece.Inthosedays,however,itwasRhea,theMotherofthegodsthatwasgivenhonor.

Later,inthe1600's,inEnglandtherewasanannualobservancecalled“MotheringSunday”.ItwascelebratedduringJune,onthefourthSunday.OnMotheringSunday,theservants,whogenerallylivedwiththeiremployers,wereencouragedtoreturnhomeandhonortheirmothers.Itwastraditionalforthemtobringaspecialcakealongtocelebratetheoccasion.

IntheU.S.,in1907AnnaJarvisfromPhiladelphia,beganacampaigntoestablishanationalMother'sDay.Jarvispersuadedhermother'schurchinGrafton,WestVirginatocelebrateMother'sDayonthesecondanniversaryofhermother'sdeath,the2ndSundayofMay.ThenextyearMother'sDaywasalsocelebratedinPhiladelphia.

Jarvisandothersbeganaletter-writingcampaigntoministers,businessmen,andpoliticiansintheirquesttoestablishanationalMother'sDay.Theyweresuccessful.PresidentWoodrowWilson,in1914,madetheofficialannouncementproclaimingMother'sDayanationalobservancethatwastobeheldeachyearonthe2ndSundayofMay.

ManyothercountriesoftheworldcelebratetheirownMother'sDayatdifferenttimesthroughouttheyear.Denmark,Finland,Italy,Turkey,Australia,andBelgiumcelebrateMother'sDayonthesecondSundayinMay,asintheU.S.

2.TheOriginofChristmas

ThenameChristmasisshortfor“Christ'sMass”.AMassisakindofChurchservice.Christmasisareligiousfestival.ItisthedaywecelebrateasthebirthdayofJesus.

TherearespecialChristmasservicesinChristianchurchesallovertheworld.ButmanyofthefestivitiesofChristmasdonothaveanythingtodowithreligion.ExchanginggiftsandsendingChristmascardsarethemodernwaysofcelebratingtheChristmasintheworld.

ThebirthofJesushadastory:

Mary,avirgin,wasbetrothedtoJoseph.Beforetheycametogether,shewasfoundwithchildoftheHolySpirit.Joseph,herhusband,wasmindedtoputherawaysecretly.Whilehethoughtaboutthesethings.Gabriel,anangeloftheLordappearedtohiminadreamandtoldhimnottobeafraidtotakeMaryaswife.AndMarywillbringforthaSon,andheshallcallhisname.Jesus,forhewillsavehispeoplefromtheirsins.

BeforeJesusbirths,therewentadecreefromCaesarAugustus,thatalltheworldshouldbetaxed.AndthistaxingwasfirstmadewhenCyreniuswasgovenorofSyria.Soallwenttoberegistered,everyonetohisowncity.JosephalsowentupoutofGalilee,outofthecityofNazareth,intoJudea,tothecityofDavid,whichiscalledBethlehem,becausehewasofthehouseandofthelineageofDavid,toberegisteredwithMary,hisbetrothedwife,whowaswithchild.Soitwasthatwhiletheywerethere,thedayswerecompletedforhertobedelivered.AndshebroughtforthherfirstbornSon,andwrappedhiminswaddlingcloths,andlaidhiminamanger,becausetherewasnoroomforthemintheinn.Andthat,ChristmasisthefeastofthenativityofJesus,ison25th,Decembereveryyear.ButnobodyknewtheactualbirthdayofJesus.AndtheChristmashasbecomepopularwhenChristmascardsappearedin1846andtheconceptofajollySantaClauswasfirstmadepopularinnineteenthcentury.
