ThepictureshavebeencirculatingontheChineseinternetforweeksandtriggeredapublicbacklashagainstthecountry’slargestcharity,amidaccusationsofcorruptionandmisspentdonations.
Thescandalbeganwhenthewoman,whonamesherselfonhermicroblogas“GuoMeimeiBaby”postedphotographsofherleaningonthehoodofawhiteMaserati,whichshenamedher“littlehorse”.
MorepicturesshowedherwithanorangeLamborghini,her“littlebull”,sippingdrinksonabusiness-classflight,andwithapileofHermèshandbags.
Alongsidethepictures,MsGuoboastedthathertitlewas“commercialgeneralmanager”attheChineseRedCross,aclaimthatappearedtohavebeenverifiedbySina,theinternetcompanyhostingtheblog.
FormanyChineseinternetusers,whowerealreadysuspiciousthattheRedCrossmayhavebeenmisspendingcharitabledonations,therevelationofherapparentwealthwasinfuriating.
Withindays,internetusershadbeguntoresearchherpositionandcriticisethecharity,whichwasoriginallyspunoutoftheChineseHealthministry,remainscloselytiedtothegovernment,butisamemberoftheInternationalFederationofRedCrossandRedCrescentSocieties.
Beforelong,morethan600,000postsadaywerebeingwrittenaboutMsGuoonWeibo,China’sversionofTwitter.
BoththeRedCrossandMsGuohavedeniedanylink,andshehassaidsheisnotactuallytheiremployee.
ButMsGuo’sboyfriendwassubsequentlynamedasWangJun,a42-year-oldmanwhoorganisescharitydrivesfortheRedCross.Hehasbeenforcedtoquithisposition,eventhoughMsGuoagaindeniesanylinktohim.
OnWednesday,thePeople’sDaily,theofficialmouthpieceoftheCommunistparty,wasforcedtoweighin,askinginaneditorialwhethertheRedCrosswouldeverbeabletoregainChina’strust.
