Withsomuchtoexpectthatday,Iwasreadytorun!

AndIdidn’twanttobestuckwiththepackofotherrunners,asistypicalatthebeginningofmostcross-countryraces.Sowhenthegunsounded,Itookoffrunning,leavingeveryoneelseinthedust.

Thefirstpartofourcoursefollowedtheoutsideedgeofalargeopenfieldbeforedisappearingintotheforest.Withinsecondsofthestart,Iwasfaraheadofeveryone,andallofthefanscouldseeit.Itfeltmagnificent.

Butthatfeelingdidn’tlastlong.LittledidIknowmycoachwaslaughingtohimself,thinking,“Gabeisdonefor!

”AndIwas.Mybodywastellingmetoslowdown.Mypride,however,said“No!

Notuntilyou’reoutofsightofthespectators!

”Iwasinagony,butIkeptupmypaceuntilIreachedtheforest.Onceinamongthetrees.Islowedwaydown.

Ienjoyedmostraces,evenwhilepushingmyself,butthisonewasnotenjoyableintheleast.Ifinishedtherace,butinnowherenearthetimeIcouldhaveifI’dpacedmyselfwellfromthebeginning.EverytimeIreflectonthatcross-countryseason,I’mremindedofsomething:
