OnereasonfortheincreasingpopularityofChristmasisitsproximitytoNewYear’sDay,permittingalongholidaytoevolveoutofboth.IntheU.S.theholidayhasturnedintoanextendedholidayseason,lastingfromThanksgivingDayinlateNovemberuntilNewYear’sDay,withaseeminglyendlessarrayofparties,dinners,concerts,parades,andvacationtrips.Theschoolsandcollegesareclosedfrommid-DecemberthroughearlyJanuarywhenmanypeopleeattoomuch,drinktoomuch,andwatchtoomuchAmericanfootballonTV.Manygifts,cards,andannuallettersareexchanged,andthevariousfestivitiesarenotalwaysveryrestful.ThenthesamepeoplemakeNewYear’sResolutionstoeatless,drinkless,spendless,andworkharderinthecomingyear.
