Theresearchersconductedsixstudieswhichassessedhowpeoplepresentedthemselvesandhowpeopleviewedstrangers.Peoplewhochosetowearhigherstatusitemstendedtogetanegativeresponse,butpeoplewantedtobefriendswithpeoplewhopreferredlowerstatussymbols.

Thestudytooktheroleoftheluxury(奢侈)itemtoseeifitwaspossiblethattheexpensiveitemitselfplayedapartinpeople'sreactions.Thedefinitionofastatussymbolchangedbasedonaperson'ssocioeconomicstatus,butthesameeffectofkeepingoffpotentialfriendswasseenregardlessofsocialposition.
