NelsonMandelawasthefirstblackpresidentofSouthAfricaandalegendaryfigureoftheAfricanNationalCongress,orANC.Fro,1964to1990,MandelawasimprisonedforopposingSouthAfrica’swhiteminoritygovernmentanditspolicyofracialseparation.Insteadofdisappearingfromview,Mandelabecameaworldwidesymbolofresistancetoracism.In1993Mandelaandthepresidentwhoreleasedhim,F.W.deKlerk,sharedtheNobelPeacePrize.Mandelawaselectedthecountry’spresidentin1944,andheserveduntil1999.Mandela’sautobiography,LongWALKTOFreedom,waspublishedin1944.
