thelegalrecordoftheFloridaHouse,theJournal,demandsattentiontodetailnotcommoninmostofficework.Ihavefoundjoyintheprecisionofmywork,becomingincreasinglyfascinatedwiththeintricaciesoflegalwritingandresearch.Mymindhasalwaysbeenonegiventocuriosityandproblem-solving.Crosswordpuzzlesandwordgamesaloneoncesatedme;asanadult,Ihavegrowntoappreciatestatutoryandconstitutionalpuzzlesfortheircomplexityandforthemerefactthattheremaybemultipleacceptablesolutions,ifthosesolutionsarearguedcompetently.Ihavecometounderstandthatonemayexpresscreativityandpassioninwaysthathavenothingtodowithart.

Mycreativewritingskillshavebeenputtogooduseinmycareer,however.In2006,whenClerk[xxxxx]retiredhispositionandtheOfficeoftheClerkwassplitintwoparts,myunitwasmovedandhousedunderthenewlycreatedOfficeoftheParliamentarian.ThelossofMr.[xxxxx]'sleadershipwasastrainontheoffice;however,mynewworksituationcreatedanotheropportunityforme.Mynewdirectsupervisor,Parliamentarian[yyyyyyy],recognizedandemployedmyabilitytocommunicateideaseffectively.Heallowedmetoparticipateheavilyinthewritingofseveralpublications.ThemostdauntingoftheseisPrinciples,Practices&Priorities:

AHandbookonParliamentaryPracticeintheFloridaHouseofRepresentatives,whichexploresnotonlythepracticesoftheLegislature,butalsotheintersectionstheLegislaturemustnecessarilyhavewiththeotherbranchesofFlorida'sgovernment.Theprojectrequiredextensiveresearchandfact-checking,inadditiontowritingandediting,andthroughthisprocess,IexpandedmyunderstandingandappreciationoftheFloridaConstitution.CompletionofthePrinciplesbookwaspivotalformyprofessionalcareer,becausetheresearchIdidinordertofleshoutthisbookrevealedmydesiretoparticipatemorefullyintheprocessofgovernment.WhileIhadbegunmycareerwiththeFloridaHousein2003asarecentcollegegraduatejusttryingtogetapaycheckandblendin,by2006,alargerpicturehadstartedtoemergeandIbegantoseemyselfasavaluablepartofthatpicture.

Thestudyoflawrepresentsathree-wayintersectionatwhichtheexecutive,judicial,andlegislativebranchesofgovernmentmeet;Iamdrawntothisconvergence.TobetterunderstandtheworkIhavebeendoingforthepastsixyears,Imustapproachthisworkfromadifferentangle.WhereIsit,atmydesk,Icanseesomethingsthatalawstudentmightnotsee:

Iaminvolvedinandunderstandtheengrossingofamendmentsintobills,mygraspofparliamentarypracticeissound,Ihaveadeeprespectforthenecessityofpreservingofficialdocumentsandrecords,Ihavedirectexperienceworkingwithothersinanofficesetting.Butthesequalitiesdonotgivemeacompleteviewofhowlawworks.IcanseehowabillisperfectedovertimeandIcanevaluatetheargumentsofthosewhohaveinterestinthebill,butIcannotintimatelyunderstandhowthestatuteenactedinthebillmightimpacttherealworld.Suchunderstandingisvitalifoneistoevenconsiderdraftingabill.Repeatedly,theRepresentativeswhoimpressmewiththeirgraspoftheeffectsandconsequencesofnewlaws（orchangestolaws）arethosewhoareattorneysorwhohavestudiedlaw.Yes,aRepresentativewhoisafarmerislikelytounderstandtheeffectsofabillrelatingtoagriculture;however,aRepresentativewhoisanattorneyhasabroaderpicturethanothers,becauseheorshehashaddirectinteractionwiththelawspreviousLegislatureshaveenacted.Iseekabroadphilosophicalunderstandingofhowlawsinteractwithoneanotherandhow,throughtheirinterpretationincourts,governasociety.

IamapplyingforadmissiontotheFloridaStateUniversityCollegeofLawinordertogaintheformaltrainingrequiredtopracticelawinthestateofFloridaintheserviceofthepublic.Ibelievemybackgroundandexperiencesmakemeacompetitivecandidate,particularlywhencomparedtomorerecentcollegegraduates.Myworkexperiencehasgivenmeasolidfoundationuponwhichtobuild.Iamintimatelyacquaintedwithlonghoursanddifficultwork;legislativesessionsarequitedemanding,oftenrequiringthatIworkmany16-hourdaysconsecutively.Ihaveachievedahighlevelofpersonalconfidencebyproducingqualityworkonaconsistentbasisandhavedevelopedthematurityandfocusrequiredofasuccessfulfirst-yearlawstudent.Additionally,myexperienceinwriting,editing,andmanagingtheproductionofpublicationshascausedmetovaluepreciselanguageasaneffectivecommunicationtool.Iurgeyoutotaketheseuniquequalitiesintoconsiderationwhendeterminingthemakeupofyour2009first-yearclass.

IamnotsuperstitiousnordoIbelieveafortunecookiehasthepowertopredictordeterminethefuture.Anidea:

Overthepasttenyears,I'vedemonstratedthesesamevalues.AtMITandintheworkplace,hardworkandtheabilitytosurmountobstacles,tothinkthroughproblems,andtodevelopsolutionsaremandatory.Incollege,whetherwakingupat"Oh-dark-thirty"forAirForceofficertrainingcoursesorstayingupallnighttoprogramaball-gatheringrobot,therewasneverenoughtime.Strugglingtounderstandwasnormal-thermodynamics,mykryptonite.Onedroppedclass,twoyears,andmanylatenightsspentfinishingproblemsetseventuallyledtosuccessinasubjectIthoughtIwouldneverunderstand.

Theselessonsservedmewelllater,whenthepressurewasintensetodesign,program,testandcertifyanoperatingsystemforthenextgenerationofgeneralaviationcockpitdisplays.Avionicssoftwaredevelopmentisabitofatightropewalk.Ononehand,youmustupgradethecodetomeetnewrequirements.Ontheother,everychangemustbeweighedwiththecorrespondingexpenseofcertification,acostlyprocessrequiredbytheFAAtoensureallcriticalaircraftsoftwareissafe.Everyday,Imadedecisionsthatsetthisbalance.Despitethechallenge,Iwasnothappy.AsawomanIfoundtheatmospheredifficult.Innearlyfouryears,Iworkedwithanotherfemaleengineeronlytwice.Iwasn'tmarginalized,butIwasisolated.Withnoonetoturntoforadviceonbalancinglifeandcareerandleftoutofmanymale-onlybondingexperiences,theaerospaceindustrywasnotapermanentoption.

Inspiteofthesemisgivings,mydecisiontoleaveasecurejobtotravelwasunexpectedtomanypeople.Engineersaretaughttoabhorriskandtodesignandtestitaway,insteadaimingforstabilityandsafety.Yet,Ileftfor18monthsofuncertainty.SomethingI’ddreamedofbecamepossiblewhenadocumentaryfilm-makerchosetosponsormeonmytravels.Myentrywasselectedfromhundredsinancombinationessay/interviewcompetitionbecausemyreasonsfortravel–tolearnallthatIcanofthehistory,production,andconsumptionofcandyinternationally–wereinterestingandinnovativeandaboveall,unique.Myearliestmemoriesincludetryingchewinggumforthefirsttimeandstartingupanelementaryschoolcandybusiness;thememoryofbootcampthathasremainedmostintenselyalivetomeisthesweetnessofanicecreamsandwichafterweekswithoutsugar.Itravelnotjusttoseenewsightsandmeetnewpeople,butalsotoexploreafascinating,delicious,andattimesunsettlingaspectofhumanhistory.Fromtheuseofslavelaborinsugarcultivationtointernationalcorporationsforcingtheclosureoflocalbusinessesandpushingeatinghabitsthatleadtodiabetesandtoothdecay,candycanhaveanunsavorycore.However,itcanalsobringcomfortandcelebration,nomatterwhereweare.Thisbalanceofthegoodandthebadhaslongbeenpartofthehistoryofcandy.
