Dukeoftenjokedthathelearnedtoplaythepianotoattractgirls.Whilewashingdishesforhissummerjob,Dukemetawaiterwhoinvitedhimtogoandseeragtime(anearlyformofjazz)pianist,HarveyBrooks.Brooksplayedragtimeinawaythatdidnotfollowtherulesofclassicalpianomusic—hehadfreedomtochangetherulesandexpresshimselfmorefreely.DukediscoveredthathewantedtomakehisownmusictooandthenhetaughthimselfhowtoplaythepianolikeHarveyBrooks.Hepractiseduntilhisfingerscouldflyandevenarrangedmelodiesasheplayed.

SoonDukebeganplayingforhishighschooldances.Whenhewas19,hestartedplayingatpartiesanddancehalls.

DukethenmovedtoNewYork.Thereheplayedindifferentjazzclubs,saloonsanddancehalls.Soonhewasleadinghisownband,theWashingtoniansattheKentuckyClub,locatedinTimesSquare.

In1927,aftergivingaperformanceattheCottonClub,hebegantoproducesophisticated(高水平的)arrangementsofhisown.Hetouredtheworldwithhisorchestraandcomposedthousandsofsongs.Dukeledhisorchestrauntilhisdeath.
