Clintonlookedat33paststudiesthatexaminedpaperversusscreenreading.Allofthestudiesweredonebetween2008and2018.Thestudiescollectivelyhad2,799studysubjects,includingbothchildrenandadults.Clinton’sexaminationfoundthatreadingfrompapergenerallyledtobetterunderstandingandimprovedaperson’sperformanceontestsconnectedtothereadingmaterial.And,shefoundnomajordifferencesinreadingspeedbetweenthetwo.

Clintonandotherresearchershavefoundscreenreadersoftenbelievetheyunderstandatextbetterthantheyreallydo.And,theyaremorelikelythanpaperreaderstooverestimatehowwelltheywoulddoonatestofthematerialstheyhaveread.

Yet,thisoverestimatedsenseofunderstandingisespeciallycommonamongscreenreaders.Clintonsaid,“Therearemanypossiblereasonsforsuchfindings.Overconfidenceofreenreaders,forexample,couldbetheresultofadistracted,lessfocusedmind.Readers’preferencesarealsoimportant.Researchshowsthemajorityofpeopleofallagespreferreadingfrompaper.Ifyouareenjoyingthereadingprocess,you’regoingtobemoreinvolved.You’regoingtobepayingbetterattention.Preferencesareakeyissuehere.”
