Overview

Overview

UndergraduatestudentsatPrincetonbenefitfromtheextraordinaryresourcesofaworld-classresearchinstitutiondedicatedtoundergraduateteaching.Princetonfacultyhaveanunparalleledreputationforbalancingexcellenceintheirfieldswithadedicationtotheirstudents,throughbothclassroominstructionandindependentstudyadvising.

Undergraduatesfulfillgeneraleducationrequirements,chooseamongawidevarietyofelectivecourses,andpursuedepartmentalconcentrationsandinterdisciplinarycertificateprograms.RequiredindependentworkisahallmarkofundergraduateeducationatPrinceton.StudentsgraduatewitheithertheBachelorofArts（A.B.）ortheBachelorofScience（B.S.E.）degree.

TheGraduateSchooloffersadvanceddegreesspanningthehumanities,socialsciences,naturalsciencesandengineering.

TheUndergraduateProgram

PrincetonUniversityisaprivate,coeducationaluniversitylocatedinPrinceton,NewJersey,midwaybetweenNewYorkCityandPhiladelphia.The500-acrecentralcampusisresidential,andallbuildingsarewithineasywalkingdistanceofoneanother.Foundedin1746astheCollegeofNewJersey,Princetonnowhasanundergraduatepopulationofapproximately4,850studentsworkingtowardthebachelorofarts（A.B.）orbachelorofscienceinengineering（B.S.E.）degree.Withitsoutstandingfinancialaidprogram,whichprovidesgrantsratherthanloans—whichdonothavetoberepaid—theUniversityensuresthataPrincetoneducationisaffordabletoqualifiedstudentsfromallsocioeconomicbackgrounds.Studentscomefromall50statesandfrommorethan95countries.TheUniversityplanstoincreasethesizeofitsundergraduatestudentbodyto5,200studentsbythe2012–13academicyear.Asinglefull-timefacultyof850teachesbothgraduateandundergraduatestudents.

WhiletheundergraduatecollegeiscentraltoPrincetonUniversity,itisadistinctentitywithinit.Nearlyallundergraduatesareinresidenceonthecampus,andhousingisguaranteedforallfouryears.Thesixresidentialcollegesprovideavastarrayofeducationalandsocialactivities.Inlivinganddiningarrangements,extracurricularactivities,anddailysociallife,undergraduatesmakeupasinglestudentbodyregardlessofdegreecandidacyorprogramofstudy.Withmanylectures,classes,andlaboratoriesincommon,undergraduatesenjoyasharedacademicexperience,whethertheyareconcentratinginliterature,naturalsciences,publicaffairs,orengineering.
