Abstract
Buttheyalsoprovidedanearlyglimpseatthecomplexsetoftradeoffs
facingpartyleaders,fromtheirdesiretomaketheirowninfluencefeltto
theirworriesaboutoffendingthecandidatesandparticularconstituencies
nottomentionthelong,sometimestroubledrelationshipbetweenMr.Gore
andtheClintons.
Theissuespartyleadersaregrapplingwith,theysaid,includehowto
avoidtheperceptionofaback-roomdealthatthwartsthewillofmillions
ofvoterswhohavecastballotsinprimariesandcaucuses.Thatperception
couldcrippletheeventualDemocraticnomineeschancesofwinningthe
presidencyinNovember,theysaid.
