ThisthesisisintendedtoanalyzetherevengeofHeathcliffinWutheringHeights.Althoughinmanyreaders’eyeheisamarbledemon,Heathcliffisinfactalsoabravemanfightingforlove.

InthesocietyinwhichHeathclifflives,equalityandloveonlybelongtomenofwealth.ThiscruelrealityreallygivesHeathcliffaheavyblow.Hedevelopsaplantorevengepeoplearoundhim.ThestoryofHeathcliffandCatherineisthecoreofthenovelWutheringHeights.

Thethesisconsistsoffivechapters.Thefirstchapterincludesanintroduction,aliteraturereviewandanoutlineofthethesis.ThesecondchapterdiscussesthepassionatelovebetweenHeathcliffandCatherine.ByanalyzingCatherine’schangeoflove,theauthoruncoversthecausesofCatherine’sbetrayal.ChapterThreefocusesonHeathclif’srevenge,expoundingitsbrutality.ThefourthchapterexploresHeathcliff’sreturnofhumanitybyexaminingNelly’srevelationandtheyoungergeneration’slove.Thelastchapteristheconclusionofthethesis,brieflysummarizingthemajorfindingsachievedintheresearch.

Heathcliff’srebelliouspersonalityisworthyofappreciation.Hedarestochallegetheestablishedorderofthesociety.Inthissense,heisarealhero.Everyoneisaproductofhistime.Evenifhispersonalityisdistortedinsomereder’seye,itisthesocietythatistobeheldresponsible.Heisatrueindividualisticfighterratherthanacrazyavenger.

EmilyBronteisafamousnovelistandpoetinthe19thcentury.SheisconsideredasoneofthegreatestwomenwritersinthehistoryofEnglishliterature.Shesufferedalotfromsocialconstraintsandshewaseagerforalifeoffreedomandequality.EmilyBronte’snovelisareflectionofherreallife.Hermotherdiedwhenshewasonlythree.Shehadnofriendsandherfathershowedindifferencetoher,whichgaverisetohertimidityandsullennessinherchildhood.Shebelievedthattobreakawayfromallthedifficultiesshehadtorelyontheirownstruggle.
