Oliver’smotherdiesjustafterhisbirth,sohehastospendhisfirstnineyearsinabadlyrunhomeforyoungorphansandthenistransferredtoaworkhouseforadults.Aftertheotherboysbullyhimintoaskingformoregruelattheendofameal,theparishbeadle,Mr.Bumble,offersfivepoundstoanyonewhowilltaketheboyawayfromtheworkhouse.OlivernarrowlyescapesbeingapprenticedtoabrutishchimneysweepandiseventuallyapprenticedtoMr.Sowerberrywhoisaundertaker.Oliverattackshisotherapprenticebecausetheguymakesdisparagingcommentsabouthismom,andheincurstheSowerberrys’wrath.Desperate,OliverrunsawayandtravelstowardsLondon.
OliverisstarvedandexhaustedwhenhemeetsJackDawkins,whotalksanddresseslikeagrownmanthough
heisn’tolderthanOliver.JackoffersOlivershelterintheLondonhouseofhisbenefactor,Fagin.ItturnsoutthatFaginisacareercriminalwhotrainsorphanchildrentopickpocketsforhim.Afterafewdaysoftraining,Oliverissentonapickpocketingmissionwithtwootherboys.Whenheseesthemswipeahandkerchieffromanelderlygentleman,Oliverfeelshorrifiedandrunsoff.Heiscaughtbutnarrowlyescapesbeingconvictedofthetheft.Mr.Brownlow,whosehandkerchiefwasstolen,takesthefeverishOlivertohishomeandnurseshimbacktohealth.Mr.BrownlowisstruckbyOliver’sresemblancetoaportraitofayoungwomanthathangsinhishouse.Oliverblossomshimselfthere,buttwoadultsinFagin’sgang,BillSikesandhisloverNancy,captureOliverandreturnhimtoFagin.

ComparedwithOliver,IappreciatethecharacterNancymore.Sheisimmersedinthevicescondemnedbyhersociety,butshealsocommitsperhapsthemostnobleactwhenshesacrificesherownlifeinordertoprotectOliver.Nancy’smoralcomplexityisuniqueamongthemajorcharactersinOliverTwist.Thenovelisfullofcharacterswhoareallgoodandcanbarelycomprehendevil,suchasOliver,RoseandMr.Brownlow,andcharacterswhoareallevilandcanbarelycomprehendgood,suchasFagin,SikesandMonks.OnlyNancycomprehendsandiscapableofbothgoodandevil.Herultimatechoicetodogoodatagreatpersonalcostisastrongargumentinfavorofincorruptibilityofbasicgoodness,nomatterhowmanyenvironmentalobstaclesitmayface.Nancy’sloveforSikesexemplifiesthemoralambiguityofhercharacter.AssheherselfpointsouttoRose,devotiontoamancanbe“acomfortandapride”undertherightcircumstances.ButforNancy,suchdevotionis“anewmeansofviolenceandsuffering”—indeed,herrelationshipwithSikesleadshertocriminalactsforhissakeandeventuallytoherowndemise.The
