selfcompassion,self-esteemandacontrolgroup.Theself-esteemgroupwasaskedtorespondby“talkingtoyourselfaboutthisregretfromtheaspectofconfirmingyourpositivequalities”.

Thecontrolgroupwasaskedtowriteabouttheirfavoritehobbyratherthantheirregret.Then,theywereaskedabouttheirfeelingsofforgiveness,acceptanceandpersonalimprovementfollowingtheexercise.

Theyfoundthattheself-compassiongroupreportedgreaterfeelingsofacceptance,forgivenessandpersonalimprovement,comparedwiththecontrolgroupandtheselfesteemgroup.Inotherwords,focusingonyourbestqualitiesisnotwhathelpsyoufeelbetteraboutaregret.Rather,beingcompassionatetowardyourselfiswhatmaymakeadifference,theresearchersfound.

It’spossiblethatpeoplewhopracticeself-compassionareabletoconfronttheirregretsandseewhatwentwrong,sotheycanmakeabetterchoiceinthefuture,ZhangtoldLiveScience.Self-compassionpushespeopletoaccepttheirregretinsteadofrunningawayfromit.
