Saccharin（糖精）istheonlytrulyman-madesweetener.Itwasdiscoveredbyaccident100yearsagoinan

Morerecenttestingwithotheranimalswithsmallamountsofsaccharinhasnotrepeatedthesameresults.Even
withtheseexperimentalresults,saccharinlabelsarestillrequiredtocarryawarningsayingithasbeenshowntocause
cancerinlaboratoryanimals.In1990,saccharinwasallowedtobesoldinthemarketagain.
Becauseitishundredsoftimessweeterthantablesugar,onlyasmallamountofsaccharinisusedathome,in
restaurantsorinthefood-makingindustry.
Anothersweetenerwecommonlyuseisaspartame（甜味剂）.Itisnotsosweetassaccharin,butmuchsweeter
thantablesugar.Unlikesaccharin,however,aspartamecanbeabsorbedintothebody.Itcontains4caloriespergram,
thesameastablesugar.Butaspartameis180timessweeterthansugar.
Althoughaspartameisfoundinthousandsofproducts,itssafety,likesaccharin,hasstillbeenuncertain.
