ThetimesofIndiarecentlycaughtupwithPayenginhisremoteforestcottagetolearnmoreabouthowhecametoleavesuchanunbelievablemarkonthelandscape.

Itallstartedwaybackin1979,whenfloodswashedalargenumberofsnakesashoreonthesandbar.Onedayafterthefloods,Payeng,only16then,foundtheplacedottedwiththedeadsnakes.Thatwastheturningpointofhislife.

“Thesnakesdiedintheheatwithoutanytreecover.Isatdownandweptovertheirlifelessbodies.Iaskedtheforestdepartmentiftheycouldgrowtreesthere.Theysaidnothingwouldgrowthere.Instead,theyaskedmetotrygrowingbamboo.Itwaspainful,butIdidit.Therewasnobodytohelpme.Nobodywasinterested,”saysPayeng,now47.

Whileit'stakenyearsforPayeng’sremarkablededicationtoplantingtoreceivesomewell-deservedrecognitioninternationally,itdidn'ttakelongforwildlifeintheregiontobenefitfromtheforest.Demonstratingakeenunderstandingofecologicalbalance,Payengeventransplantedantstohisecosystemtomaintainitsnaturalharmony.Soontheshadelesssandbarwastransformedintoanaturalecosystem.Theforest,calledtheMolaiwoods,nowservesasasafehabitatfornumerousbirds,deer,tigersandeleghants.
