Thewaterfiltration(过滤)systemismuchlikewhatyou’dfindinafishlank,butithasthepotentialtocleanupanentireocean.Thescabincanrun24/7,accordingloitswebsite.And,amazingly,PeterandAndrewsaytheyhavenevercaughtafishorseaanimalintheirpumpsinfouryearsoftesting.

Inrecentyears,fluvaccineshavebeenbasedonHINI,H3N2andeitheroneortwotypesofinfluenzaBvirus.Eachofthesehasa“reference”type,whichisusedtomakeseedvirus.Producersinjecttheseedtypesintoeggsandincubate(孵)themasthevirusgrows.Thentheypurifythevirus,andeitherweakenitorkillittomakeavaccine.

Usingeggsisatrickyandunpredictableprocess.Sometimesthevirusdoesn’tgrowwellineggs,whichcanmeanlessvaccinethanexpected.Theresultisafluvaccinethatdoesn’toffermuchprotection.“Aslongaswehaveeggswearegoingtohavethisproblem,”saidScottHensley,afluvirusexpert,“Theonlysolutionisnottodependoneggs.”

Fluisamajorkiller.The2017-2018seasonhasbeenasevereone,hittingtheentireU.S.withwidespreadinfluenzainfection(传染)atonceforweeksonend,andkilling97childrensofar.Againstthisthreat,evenalesssatisfyingfluvaccinewilldefinitelyhelp.“Evenwhenyouhavethesemismatchesitwillnotpreventinfectionbutlikelypreventdiseaseseverity,”saidHensley.
