Whentheshipwascrushedbyice,PercewasoneofthoseleftbehindonElephantIslandtowaitforrescue.ShackletonandafewotherssetoutthroughverydangerousseastoSouthGeorgiaIslandtogethelpsothattheycouldallbesaved.

TheconditionsforthoseleftonElephantIslandwereverybad.Theyhadlittlefood,otherthanpenguinorseal,problemskeepingwarm,problemsmeltingtheiceforwaterandprotectingtheirfingersandtoesfromfrostbite.Percehadtohavehistoesremovedbecausetheybadbecomeaffectedbythecold.
